Hi Kathya-Judith Van Praag got in touch with me about the event this Sunday. I'm a Seattle writer who just published a book called Lessons from the Monk I Married. She mentioned there are time slots available for readings at the event. Would love to take part. Contact me at kathyjenkins@hotmail.com Thanks, Katherine

Kathya, Where is the piece you want me to read? I'd like to. It's probably right in front of me but I don't see it. Thanks, N

Hi Kathya, I see Kamy has dropped by to invite you to the meet-up on Tuesday, but I wonder whether she told you about the following:

MONDAY, JUNE 28TH:
"WHITE READERS, MEET BLACK AUTHORS": How Women of Color are Reviewed, Read and Received, with Kamy Wicoff and Carleen Brice.

Tweet: Live chat with Carleen Brice and Kamy Wicoff about how women of color are read and reviewed, 1-2PM EST, call in 347-884-9779.

Monday, June 28th, from 1PM to 2PM EST on She Writes radio, call 347-884-9779 to join a discussion with Kamy Wicoff and Carleen Brice, who created the tongue-in-cheek video "White Readers, Meet Black Authors." Carleen Brice is author of the novels "Orange Mint and Honey" (which was optioned by the Lifetime Movie Network) and "Children of the Waters," which One World/Ballantine released in June 2009. She also wrote "Lead Me Home: An African American’s Guide Through the Grief Journey" (HarperCollins), and edited the anthology "Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number: Black Women Explore Midlife" (Beacon Press, Souvenir Press). Her book "Walk Tall: Affirmations for People of Color sold over 100,000 copies and was in print with traditional publishers for 10 years."

Hi there -- just wanted to drop by your page and invite you personally (or at least virtually) to our first-ever She Writes Seattle meetup, celebrating our first-anniversary! We are so grateful to the event's organizer, Judith van Praag, for taking a risk and stepping up to host. I hope you will support her and bring yourself and other women who write (no need for them to be members) to the Seattle gathering. At the meetup writers will take part in the She Writes "Book Communion," where attendees arrive with one book, their own or another She Writers', new or gently used, and leave with another book as a meaningfully way to support one another's work. We will also be blowing out a candle and making a wish for our upcoming writing year -- along with She Writers gathering in 16 cities around the country. I hope you will be part of this historic (well, at least kind of cool) occasion, and RSVP now to Judith here.

Kathya, I'd say look for the groups that seem to be covering your interests. If you have specific goals--then look for groups who can help with those goals. Some people are very active and write a lot of comments on the discussions and make comments on the main page. I would check those out and see if there is anyone who strikes you as a kindred spirit and friend them. I like this site better than facebook because it feels like a safe environment and everyone is focused on writing and being published.

Also, some people are starting to meet in real time and that's even better. I belong to the Western Massachusetts group as well because I live in that part of the world and although we are a small group we got together and it was fantastic!

When I manage to find a few minutes I'm going to look through our southern writers group and see how many people are near one another and suggest some meet ups.

I'd love to know more about your work. When you say writing in dialect, what specifically do you mean? And do you have questions about that? If so, what are they? Take care, Nicky

Kathya, Welcome to the Southern Writers Group. We're very glad to have you. I'm intrigued with your work and if there is anything I can do to support you please let me know. We tend to be rather casual--we're southern, right--but everyone is supportive and helpful. So please go on over and introduce yourself and add to a discussion or start one. Let me know how it goes. Nicky

So true, the site has the potential to suck you in. On the other hand, there's a lot of "the business of writing/publishing" to check out that will be worth your while.

Hello Kathya, Good to see you here. There's so much to peruse at SheWrites, I'm sure you'll enjoy your membership. Check out the bookshelf at the top to see what-all is produced by women writers in our times. See you tomorrow at your and Aunt Mama's reading at the Starbucks in Madison Park, Seattle, 7-8 p.m. right?

"Actually, yes, I love that idea. Sounds like a triple win. Sounds like everything you've thought to add is exactly what I'd suggest. When would you like to post it? You're welcome to do it this month, if you'd like. Cheers "
