What it's like to visit an active volcano

There's a feeling of enormity when in the presence of an active volcano, an awareness of forces unimaginable, that's difficult to convey. Everything about the experience feels powerful. When I look at the pictures and video my son and I shot when we visited Chaitén Volcano in Northern Patagonia, Chile last spring while doing research for my next novel, I remember the experience as being so much more.
