Amazon Takes Over the World

If I were a cartoonist I’d draw a picture of Amazon gobbling up the world, or standing on top of the Empire State Building throwing airplanes to the ground like King Kong. Alas, my artistic talent is limited to stick figures, so I’m left with words.Amazon is a study in contradictions. I often call Amazon the website that authors most love to hate. Without Amazon, book publishing would not be where it is today. The Big Six publishing houses would still have a lock on whose books see the light of…See More

Writing a Children's Book? Here are Some Tips to Remember

I’ve heard many people suggest that it is easier to write a book for children, either because the number of words needed is much less or because they think that a book written for children needs less attention to plot, less character development, or just less attention to detail.Nothing could be further from the truth. Because children’s books are shorter, it is all the more important to develop a plot and interesting characters quickly. And don’t think that writing for younger…See More

Ebooks Gain Credibility With News Media

As I was listening to the news on CNN last night I noticed that Wolf Blitzer introduced his guest as the author of an e-book. David Frum, the author of “Why Romey Lost” has obviously chosen to publish as an e-book because he is writing about a timely subject – a subject that will be very popular for a very short time only. This is a great example of how to use an e-book. If you have information on a current event that will have value for a short-time only, an e-book is a tremendous way to…See More

What Do You Do With a Negative Review?

Two of the authors I work with as an editor and publisher recently received negative reviews of their work. I don’t mean the “constructive criticism” kind of bad review, or even the “I’m not particularly fond of this author’s work” review. I mean the downright malicious and mean review sprinkled with phrases such as, “the author needs to go take a good creative writing course,” and “I feel that reading this book was a waste of my time and money.”Of course, each of the reviewers couched their…See More

New Press Release or Old Style? Which is Right for You?

Press releases used to be pretty straight forward affairs. They were basic announcements of the who, what, when, why and how designed to aid a busy journalist and persuade him to use your news in his newspaper or on-air news show. They were  short, to the point, and had all of the basics arranged in a formula with as much information as possible packed into the first paragraph. The old press release was never, never more than one page. Not only has social media changed the way we receive our…See More

Plan Time for Creativity

Are you having trouble finding time to write? It seems that everyone I have spoken with since Labor Day has the same complaint, “No matter how hard I try I just can’t seem to find the time or the energy to write. I just can’t seem to come up with any new ideas.”Whether you are writing a blog, new copy for your business website or a full-length novel, finding the time, the creative energy and the inspiration to write can seem difficult, if not impossible. I think it is no accident that I’m…See More
