Mid-winter inspiration

On Monday night I went with a colleague to hear Elizabeth Strout read from her Pulitzer Prize winning novel in stories, Olive Kitteridge, at an event at the New School. It was completely wonderful. She read for about 15 minutes, and even though it was from one of the stories I liked least (although I should say that I just ADORED this book) I was riveted, as was my colleague who had not read the book at all. In the Q&A section Ms. Strout was warm, honest, funny, and generous, even though…See More

I'm a devoted football fan and am continuously subjected to commercials that mercilessly mock and belittle my gender. The pathetic "woman as shrill, nagging, spoiler-of-all-good-times" motif is showing no signs of waning. The up side?…

Great piece! As I followed the story over the weekend I was wondering what it was like for authors trying to wait it out. All I can say is - hang in there and keep writing.

Not only that, but Seth Grahame-Smith landed an incredibly lucrative book deal after P&P&Z. Perhaps it will turn out that he's a great new talent, but for now it does feel like he got a bit of a break at the expense of poor Jane.

I'm in complete agreement with you. I thought the additional scenes were poorly written and that the author had no more than a basic knowledge of the work. Reading it felt like an insult and I ended up quitting. And it's going to be a…

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

I wonder if people would have felt differently about this book if the author writing the zombie sections had been a woman. Having a male author inject zombie fight scenes into Jane Austen, though sort of a cute gimmick, maybe have been a missed opportunity to actually say something clever about Austen's project. I wonder if there is a woman author out there who could have looked at an Austen-novel/horror mash-up as a way to comment on just how dire and precarious the life of an unmarried woman…See More

I applaud this trend in non-fiction. It has the capacity to pair serious writers and genuine research with seat-of-the-pants narrative. http://www.examiner.com/x-2509-NY-Books-Examiner~y2009m7d8-Books-about-the-art-world
