Not to add to your Amazon bill, Lucille, but I feel that I've also learned a lot from the annual Best American Essays of [whatever year] anthologies. Lopate's book is excellent, but I also find it helpful to see what contemporaries are writing.
Lucille, I would say that "bigger, more universal lesson" means that whatever experiences or observations the author writes about should carry some meaning about the lives of her readers, opening up their perceptions in some new way.
