Katy, just returning to teaching after 10 years home at with my three kids (youngest is 4); you've made me grateful for the fact that I returned here instead of waiting another ten years. Still, it is a difficult and sad subject. I hope we can…
Hi Katy - I really, really appreciated your essay...as someone who went from full to part time 12 years ago and then - horrors - becoming a freelance writer, I've tried to keep my options open for returning to a "real" job and told…
Hi all, I have a new essay on Salon.com. The headline sums it up. "Regrets of a stay-at-home mom/Consider this a warning to new mothers: Fourteen years I 'opted out' to focus on my family. Now I'm broke."…

Thank you so much, Lanita! This is very well put: "even a parent who knows this, someone like myself, it's still difficult to trust our own instincts and common sense because we've been so indoctrinated to trust the studies." Me…
My latest piece for the awesome "Brain, Child" magazine is a bit more article-like than most of my essays. Maybe we could call it an essicle. Anyway, it's about all those parenting studies that supposedly prove that some particular…
Hi all, I wanted to post my latest article for "Brain, Child" -- an awesome magazine for mother-readers and an excellent potential market for mother-writers. It's about all those studies that supposedly prove that some particular…

Sounds wonderful, only it may need to be in Fort Collins CO. It's highly unlikely that I'll be coming to Minn. anytime soon. I checked out your writing website of articles and bookmarked it for reading in between things. It looks…
Meg, this month's Real Simple contains six Thanksgiving essays by famous authors, including Garrison Keillor, Frank Bruni and Allegra Goodman. You could check them out for inspiration -- or for pitfalls to avoid, depending on your reactions to…
I've found that magazines often try to get all rights, but if you call or email and say you want to change the contract and retain the rights yourself (or have them revert to you after, say, six months) they usually agree pretty readily.

Katy, just returning to teaching after 10 years home at with my three kids (youngest is 4); you've made me grateful for the fact that I returned here instead of waiting another ten years. Still, it is a difficult and sad subject. I hope we can collectively shape our future to put motherhood somehow on a financial track. How many hours we've all, separately, I'm sure, devoted to "how do I stay at home and raise my children and earn money without hurting both endeavors..." Wish I had an answer. What creative paths we all end up forging. You'd think, given the value of mothering children (our future) we'd have figured something out over the centuries. But thanks for the honest look at your experience.
Hi Katy - I really, really appreciated your essay...as someone who went from full to part time 12 years ago and then - horrors - becoming a freelance writer, I've tried to keep my options open for returning to a "real" job and told myself that as long as I'm still working SOMEWHERE, I'm still marketable. I suspect your experience is a whole lot more likely. Yet I think, even so, I'd have made the same choice to be around and flexible for our two daughters. It's a nuanced subject and you've done a great job exposing the part that people (me included) would like to pretend away...

Hi there -- just wanted to drop by your page and invite you personally (or at least virtually) to our first-ever She Writes Chicago meetup, celebrating our first-anniversary! We are so grateful to the event's organizer, Eileen O'Halloran, for taking a risk and stepping up to host. I hope you will support her and bring yourself and other women who write (no need for them to be members) to the Chicago gathering. At the meetup writers will take part in the She Writes "Book Communion," where attendees arrive with one book, their own or another She Writers', new or gently used, and leave with another book as a meaningfully way to support one another's work. We will also be blowing out a candle and making a wish for our upcoming writing year -- along with She Writers gathering in 16 cities around the country. I hope you will be part of this historic (well, at least kind of cool) occasion, and RSVP now to Eileen here.
I wanted to connect with you and ask for your feedback. I recently did my first on-camera interview for the children's book on child sexual abuse prevention that I wrote, My Body Belongs to Me. Please let me know what you think when you have some time.
Hello Katy! I just saw a recent post of yours on the Midwest Writers group page and thought I'd stop by and say hello. I currently reside in Eagan, MN, and am glad to have found someone so geographically close.
Hi Katy!! So great to see you here -- you must be thrilled with the recent nc-mama coverage... has it been driving any traffic to the great piece you wrote? xoRebekah
