Movie review: Klute

1971’s Klute was released alongside considerable controversy. Leading lady Jane Fonda had been earlier outspoken on behalf of perceived radical causes. The next year, she starred in a propaganda film by the Communist North Vietnamese, a decision that would forever win her the derisive nickname of Hanoi Jane. At the same time,…See More

Anatomy of an Evening, Part II

II.If anyone sought me out first, he was usually the type that absolutely no one else wanted. The tall, overly tanned hillbilly who spoke truthfully about his past crack usage is an example. Crack makes you want to fuck. You don't say. I quickly sidestepped those sorts of men. Those who walked around shirtless or nearly shirtless could usually be avoided without much trouble. A few decided to get very familiar very immediately, sticking a hand down my shirt before I could even protest. I…See More

Anatomy of an Evening, Part I

Anatomy of an EveningI.For most of the evening, I’d been trying to put the moves on an older man with a bald head. He appreciated the attention but was far too preoccupied to be pulled away from the action. While I tried to play coquette, minus the fluttering eyelashes, his body language pulled his skinny form farther and farther downward to the floor. Not interested. Not interested. He was there for the distraction only, a means to escape, mostly. An hour into my effort, I heard a familiar…See More

Writers I Have Known

There have been times in my life where I have wondered if anyone fits the dictionary definition of stability. Admittedly, I have asked these questions when witnessing the self-destruction of yet another artist. When I've known them personally, the shock takes on even more sorrow and melancholy. Based on multiple conversations with others over the years, I know the stories I am about to share occur over and over again. My own worst days are now gratefully beyond me. One of the more difficult life…See More

Short Story Continuation

For a time, I thought all of these disparate short story pieces should be eventually conjoined together. Now I believe they stand out by themselves best, individually, as vignettes. I haven't quite decided yet. The best strategy may be to compile them together thematically, or even to be so bold as to write a screenplay someday. Today's post explores a major area of my life I don't easily confront. I fought with myself in the course of writing, conscious that I shouldn't self-censor to the…See More

Holidays and Holy Days: An Open Letter

Periodically, I write open letters to my Meeting on its listserve. This particular correspondence was sparked by an article I read in a monthly Quaker periodical. In the beginning, Friends did not celebrate Christmas, believing it to be a tradition foist upon them, and one in contradiction to their beliefs. They faced fines for daring to keep their shops open on Christmas Day.…See More

The Return of the Short Story

Editor's Note:I tried, in the beginning, to write in an strict, numerical order while compiling this ongoing short story in progress. Now, I think it may be easier if I document specific anecdotes first, then link them together later as they fit. For those inclined to read these segments, perhaps one can see the creative process at work.____________I remember the happy times spent together. The night-long rainstorm we meandered through, in no hurry, while walking in downtown. Our hands brushed…See More

The Politics of Money and Body Acceptance

Before I go any further, I am conscious of how carefully I need to pick my words. Be patient with me as I thread a tiny needle on a search for the truth. The center is what I seek. I’ll save the sides for others who may want to further the debate, but will really only start an argument. I’m not looking for scapegoats, just a middle ground. On a crowded flight…See More

Over the River and Through the Woods

As I write, I am taking into account last minute travel preparations. Electrical cords must be unplugged. The heat must be turned down low. Don't forget the coffee pot. Bags must be checked, then rechecked. What have I forgotten? I always forget something. Is there any way to avoid NOT forgetting something? Whatever I misplace can usually be purchased upon reaching my destination, should it be essential. Several months back, I bought an expensive and very large piece of luggage. Prior bags were…See More

The Fallacy of Good Intentions

In my writing, I find myself sometimes compelled to challenge, to stretch. My intention is not to insult or to disregard the views of others, but rather to expand the discussion. In my religious work, I often feel led to do much the same thing. My vocal ministry has at times been taken as offensive, but I have chosen to speak for reasons and motives beyond myself. Some of what I’ve written…See More

Too Much Like My Mother/Not Enough Like My Mother

My therapist has a way of verbally hitting me square between the eyes during session.  I’m not objecting at the technique, but I must admit I don’t always have a chance to brace for impact. You usually aren’t attracted to strong women.  You seem instead to be attracted to women you think you can save, heal, or both.Naturally, I took some immediate offense to this statement.  I’m regularly in support of women who are take charge and straightforward sorts of people.  A male ally, I don’t want to…See More

Short Story, Part Seven

Trigger WarningI began writing this memoir after the dream. Once again a small child, I was climbing a tall tree. My intention was to reach the top, but the entire bark was coated with sap. Feeling frustrated, I would wipe the sap on my pants, or on nearby leaves. It didn’t matter. I always ended up with a little more on my hands because I had to grip the trunk of the tree to make my way upward.Later, I realized that this was a metaphor for my life, and on more than a single level. Why was I…See More

Occupy DC: Or Where I've Been Recently

I’ve spent a few hours the past couple days at one of the Occupy DC protests. As I was told Thursday night during my visit, there are actually two going on simultaneously. One of them is in Freedom Plaza and is peopled by hardcore serious activists™. It trends a little older and grayer. This is because their demonstration had been planned much farther in advance, well before the original Occupy Wall Street in NYC got underway. Its numbers may be a few hundred more or so. This is the group that…See More
