It’s about 11:07 p.m. Argentinian time. The temperature? Upper-90s, at least. Hot enough that sitting inside with the overhead fan whirring full-force and the window wide open isn’t enough to stop the sweat from pouring off my forehead, dripping down my cheeks and ears and neck.
I told some of my pals on Facebook about this, but I received a response from my fourth literary agent query (first was Andrea Brown Lit Agency, second was the agent who represented Hush, Hush, and…

There are many reasons not to give your writing away for free, but I feel just as many reasons to do it for a budding writer.
Not long ago I began writing a story titled The Mirror (http://prolificnovelista.com/tags/the-mirror/). It was the emotional runoff of finishing Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind (and not long afterwards, The Wise Man's Fear.) I have a book publishing…

Kiersi,
You are a saint. Thanks for re-sending your comments.

Kiersi,
I feel like such an idiot, but I didn't print out your comments on my query and now I can't find your message on SheWrites :). I am such a newbie. If it's not too much trouble, could you please resend them to me. I am sorry.
And I'd love to read and comment on your query letter when it's ready.
Thanks again,
Elena
Oh, that's great. Thanks so much.
Here's the query:
Dear Agent,
Fifteen-year-old Arney has grown up in a bookstore—a locked one. At birth she was kidnapped by gift traffickers, people who steal children for their paranormal talents. Not that Arney or any of the other three kids imprisoned with her have come into their gifts yet. And if they don’t perform by sixteen, they will be killed. So, time after time, they try to escape. They get caught, beaten by their guards; then they try again. And one day it works.
The four children find themselves in New York, but it’s not the city the kids have read about. The skyscrapers are replaced with gigantic sculptures, the Statue of Liberty has its eyes firmly shut, and the streets are overrun by gift traffickers. Fox, the leader of the foursome and Arney’s boyfriend, believes that if they just keep smart and alert, they’ll get out of the city whatever’s happened to it, but Arney feels that he’s wrong. She feels that the New York around them is a fake created by their kidnappers and that the only way to leave it is for her to practice her gift. She has come into it at last—she can change people’s feelings any way she sees fit. But it’s a costly talent: if Arney embraces it, Fox will be a stranger to her. Fox is adamantly against that. Yet, when the gift traffickers recapture the children, Arney has to choose: Fox or freedom.
She makes the right choice.
Thanks again, Kiersi!
Helene Dunbar said… Kiersi - thanks for the kind words and the friend request. I pretty much figured that this was a book that no one would ever want to read. Go figure! :-) I'm working with my agent on another book first so not sure when this one will see the light of day but I have my fingers cross! THANKS!
