Grandmama’s Song

http://chickunderconstruction.wordpress.com

She used to be a kid, before I knew her, and before I was my mother’s child

She played in fields of high weeds and old barns and hoped to finish the 6th grade

She was poor and orphaned but saw the world fondly

Past women’s emancipation, segregation and finally integration

She used to be a drinker, a smoker, a partier and nosey… Continue

We All Lose

It didn’t take me long to realize that we all lose

And not the “mama, where’s my shoes,

Or the “Lebron’s gone y’all” type of lose

But the slobbering down the chin

Going half on a baby to feel rescued

Muddy Waters is wailing blues kind of lose.

Like thousands of Ghanaian children sold into slavery type of news – it’s wrong

A loved one’s body appears stiff and grows cold type of news – he gone

Hi there!  Glad to hear from you!  I come to Huntsville quite often, so after the holidays I'll get in touch to see if you'd like to join me at Barnes & Noble for coffee or something.  I'll be sure to read more of your poems beforehand.  Incidentally, my best friend from college is from HSV.  She was a CE from Vandy, then on to MIT for a masters, then on to Harvard for an MBA.  Blew past me, of course!  We meet at B&N whenever she comes to town.  Do you know any of the Stanley family?  They own an eponymous construction company.  Karen would be older than you, but I know she has younger brothers.  She also has a million friends in Hsv.  I know, I know, Hsv is large now.  But, really, sometimes it can be quite small.
