Drowning by the wolf moon's light

Tonight’s full moon is the wolf moon. The last full moon I honored was the blood moon. Blood and wolves, they go together like Scotch and ice, hugs and kisses or meat and bone. (Read a great post about the wolf moon.)Tonight I would open my throat to that moon and let it take my voice. I would lie down under the stars and beg the wolves to take me—make an offering of…See More

He longed for her the way a falling man longs for wings...

Soryk woke in agony—a gaping wound in his chest. He grappled upward through the fog of the changing sleep, aware only of pain. Stinging, unappeasable ache in his heart, like an acid-dipped thorn lodged there. Grief strangled him, stole his air. She was gone. Sidra. His little elfin queen. Her body become ashes scattered to the winds,…See More

Black Identity and the Biracial Experience

In my twenties, I actively explored the myth of the tragic mulatta, read Nella Larsen's novels 'Passing’ and ‘Quicksand,’ William Wells Brown's ‘Clotel’ and Fannie Hurst's famous ‘Imitation of Life.”The experience left me wondering, was I meant to be an unhappy accessory, weighed down by tainted stereotypes, both fetishized and victimized for my skin color…See More

The launching of ships and books

Slowly, slowly, she tars the vessel’s boards and pack the hull with goods for her journey. She hangs stiff, white sails, polishes the brass, winds new coils of hemp rope and bottles lime juice for the long days away from land. She dashes a bottle of wine against the new ship’s prow, boards its sanded deck and pulls up the gangway. The anchor chain rattles as it curls around the spindle, and the sails catch the wind. Home, familiar, beloved and dull, recedes behind her. She plays sextant and…See More

Tempted by E-Readers

I've been mulling over the idea of ereaders for several months, weighing pros and cons and coming up about 50-50, until today. Book buying isn't usually an issue for me. I've always been fairly content to buy used paperbacks from secondhand stores, library stores and trade stacks of books with my literary friends. Lately, however, my system isn't working. I don't see my friends often enough (I'm talking to YOU, dear B-1) to swap books quickly enough to match my appetite. Haven't borrowed a…See More

A novel goes into production

At long last! I received word last week that my novel Tattoo, the sequel to Ice Song, is going into production. What exactly does that mean? For those of you who aren’t familiar with the process, I’ll outline it here.Once a manuscript has completed initial editorial processes (revisions made in response to the editorial letter and…See More

Evolving Technique, From Discovery-Writing to Structured Plotting

I used to be a "discovery writer."Oddly enough, I didn't even know there was a name for my writing style until just a couple of years ago, so far into my rabbit hole was I. Back then, I began a book or story on the strength of a head full of images, voices, snippets of plot and conversation, and then proceeded to weave them together, if a bit clumsily. This method creates a manuscript which requires much refining and retooling. It's perfect for Joycean stream of consciousness stories, less so…See More

Kirsten,
Thanks for posting the Posterous link. Sorry I didn't reply and say "thanks" sooner. I wanted to try it and then credit you for the fabulous time-saver, but - as life would have it - have been too busy to even try a time-saver. Which is, of course, kind of dumb on my part. :) I'm looking forward to seeing how Posterous works -- I see I can use it to update Twitter and Facebook as well. Very cool.

Are you using it and having good success with it? This inquiring mind wants to know.

Thanks again.

Kirsten,

I thought at first that such an app (accessing all blogs across multiple platforms) would be easy to find. But Nooooo! I'm talking to my computer geek / programmer husband about the possibility of developing one. He tells me that what I want is the equivalent of trying to make a Ford into an Audi, and then into a Mercedes. But I won't give up. In my mind -- they're all cars! I'll let you know if I find anything useful! Please do the same!

All the best,

Ami Hendrickson

Hi Kirsten,
I'll be reading from my new memoir, The Possibility of Everything (www.thepossibilityofeverything.com) at Warwick's Books in La Jolla at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10. Hoping that you can make it--would love to meet some SheWrites members in the San Diego area. I'm up in LA, myself.
All best,
Hope
