Here's my story: In 2003 (I think) I collected all the articles on my website and created an ebook for sale. It was called, "End Verbal Abuse and Save Your Marriage." The title was exactly what the book was about but I couldn't stand it.
In 2005 (?) I attended a marketing seminar. They suggested I convert the ebook into a 3-ring binder book, add some other things, call it a course, and re-title it. I did all that and the new title became, "The Secret Marriage Killer: Eradicating Emotional and Verbal Abuse." One of my sons thought it was a murder mystery, some customers who ordered it requested I turn the cover inside out(!) and in general, I thought the title (though eye-catching) was too negative, too scary, and would be off-putting to people who didn't believe they were guilty of verbal abuse or the victim of it.
I decided to publish the book as a book but first I would edit it and re-title it. For the life of me, I could not come up with a new title I liked. I wanted something memorable. I finally humbly admit that I paid someone to come up with a title and sub. Here is what he came up with:
The Healing is Mutual: Marriage Empowerment Tools to Rebuild Trust and Respect--Together.
Well, I had a lot of tools in there and thought it might be a selling point to count them and add them to the subtitle, so I did. That changed it to:
171 Marriage Empowerment Tools to Rebuild Trust and Respect--Together.
Which way do you prefer? Or do you have a different idea altogether?
