The Virgin Bride: Flash Fiction

An angel in her white dress and long veil, the pearls around her alabaster neck. Her voice, almost a whisper,"I do," she said. But she didn’t look up at him. He should’ve known better. This is why he’s walking the streets of her hometown in the middle of the night. Too skittish for sex. He sighs, looks up, and sees that somehow, he’s ended up back at the church.Of course. He’s back where he started. He gets up, crosses the street, stands in front of the carved mahogany doors; it is a scene from…See More

She has the last laugh

Cassandra. Tragic and beautiful. Adored by Apollo who gave her the gift of prophecy. When he tried to seduce her, she rebelled, said, "No, I've changed my mind." Apollo was pissed. Tricked by a woman, a mere mortal. He couldn't take away her gift, so he added a twist, "No one will ever believe you." Thus the most gifted seer in the western hemisphere was mocked and shunned. People said, "She's crazy." She's a madwoman ripping at her clothes. Laughed at. So the story goes. Yet, she has the last…See More

Wounded Artemis

Artemis is part of the triad of the Greek Virgin Goddesses; which includes Athena and Hestia. Jean Shinoda Bolen in Goddesses in Everywoman: A New Psychology of Women, explains that “these three goddesses personify the independent, active, nonrelationship aspects of women’s psychology. All three represent inner drives to develop talents, pursue interests, solve problems, compete with others, [and] express themselves.”

This is the ideal.… Continue

Persephone mourning Demeter

Posted on May 10, 2010 at 4:30pm 2 Comments

What if the roles were reversed and Persephone descends into Hades, searching for her mother, Demeter? What if she finds her, contentedly sipping red wine and eating pomegranate seeds. Nonplussed. She approaches her and says, "Mom, come home." And Demeter replies, "I'm not coming home. Ever." What happens to her then?

nice to meet you too! I'm currently working on an erotica short story, hopefully for inclusion in a print anthology. I saw your blog posts about Artemis, Persephone, etc. My short story is about Venus and the demon Asmodeus. It's my first venture into anything sort of paranormal. Looks like you have several publishing creds under your belt! I hope I'll be there one day.

Yes, I know the feeling--- I sometimes long for the good old days when I all I did was write and let my agent handle everything else, that model has certainly changed.

Well, I'm busting my butt reading out at coffee shops to generate some interest in my writing prior to this first novel coming out. Working hard, hard, hard and don't really have that much time to actually WRITE anymore. If you want to read anything of mine I have a website: www.phoebewilcox.com. I link to my various recent publications there. P

Dear Tania: Thanks so much for your comment and posting a link on your blog, will definitely check that out. Your poems sound right up my alley. Check out my website and see if you think there's anything you've written that might work--- I think its essential that women write their own histories in whatever form; poetry, myth, ficiton, non fiction, I've produced work on NPR, a historical dramatic series, and I did one episode based entirely on orginal trial transcripts from women accused of witchcraft in the 16/17th century, fascinating and so much fun. all best, LA

Am posting a link to your anthology call on my blog today. Love the topic. Have a manuscript of poems out right now called "13 Incarnations" featuring some of the iconic divas (Lady Di, Nefertiti, Joan of Arc, Marilyn) and one titled "The Three Oranges" which picks up p.o.v. of girl trapped by a witch in the orange (from the Italian Fairytale of same name). Though maybe I should step in the witches p.o.v. and see what's going on wih her. Have long been fascinated by fairytale reinterpretation, so have your essay deadline on my calendar.

I think I just sent a post explaining it --- but am editing an anthology called Tales from the Velvet Chamber: Revisioning Fairy-tale and Myth. I've create a website that--- I'm hoping--- is both a home base for writers who are interested in submitting work, as well as feminist deconstruction of the classics, hence a mix of pop culture and scholarship--- I'd like feedback on the site as well as advice on how to bring it to a larger audience. all best, LAS
