Adoption as a Second Language: A She Writes Roundtable with Lanita Andrews, Ilie Ruby, Kate St. Vincent Vogl, and Jodi McIsaac Martens

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 7:30am 8 Comments

To honor National Adoption Month here at She Writes, Lanita Andrews tapped three She Writers—a Birth Mother, an Adoptee, and an Adoptive Mother—to tackle the thorny subject of adoption and words.

As writers, we have an intimate relationship with words; we feel their weight and recognize their significance on a daily basis. For those of us touched by adoption, this relationship becomes… Continue

A Moment In The Life Of One Adoptive Mother

Posted on November 15, 2010 at 12:58pm 5 Comments

Following Jodi McIsaac Marten's lead, I am sharing a little about being an Adoptive-Mother. Here is a story about the first time I used the term First-Mother with my daughter -

We’re sitting on the loveseat, my youngest daughter and I. The mini-sofa, wrapped in beige chenille, sits perpendicular to the television, and it is my three-year-old’s favorite spot in the house. Even when the T.V is not… Continue

Lanita, Glad to have you in the novelist group! You might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion if you're not too uncomfortable talking about what you're working on. And we do a live chat every Wednesday at 1EST; instructions on how to participate are in the "Our Water Cooler Wednesdays" box near the top of the group page. Hope you can join us for that.

Hi Lanita,

Thank you for your response.  I obviously wrote this post in a very dark moment and I am thinking about deleting it from my blog.  It doesn't feel right to have it out there.  Right now my son is "doing well".  He has a place to stay and he is looking for a job.  All I can do is hope.

Sorry to hear that you have dealt with this situation with your parents.  It is an extremely helpless feeling to watch loved ones hurting themselves.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

BTW - I loved your "Uterus" post.  It made me laugh and that is a very good thing!

Hi, Lanita. First, thanks for subscribing to my blog (Two Kinds of People). I don't know if this answers your questions, but I did not see you listed as a follower, so it would appear that subscribing to a blog in a reader does not have you show up as Google Friend "Follower". However, it does show up in my Feed Subscribers account through Google's Feedburner. When you sign up as a follower directly on my blog, your avatar shows up under my list of followers. For example, I have 34 people identified as followers on my blog (I just added this feature recently), but 128 people have subscribe to my feedburner feed. I hope this helps answer your question. Again, thanks for reading.
