Rooster Reality

Late last summer, I wrote a blog, Rooster Envy, in which I described my general love for all things chicken and about a beautiful eight foot rooster I had found in Amarillo, TX.  With four months to go until my birthday and Christmas, I dreamt about that large bird on a daily basis.  He would look so cool suspended from the ceiling…he would look so amazing standing guard over our kitchen.  Although I felt he…See More

A Matter of Convenience

Growing up in small town America through the 60’s and 70’s, we never had a convenience store in our town until I was a teenager.  Before the Country Market opened their doors on the edge of town, groceries were purchased at a small IGA store on Main Street, gas was pumped by an attendant at a co-op oil…See More

Forgotten Lunch

As a parent, I have three jobs.  My jobs are to love my children, keep them safe, and to teach them about life.  I take my jobs very seriously.  So when Hunter walks away from me in a parking lot, I grab her arm and jerk her back to my side.  If my yelling makes her cry, maybe she can understand my fear.If I hug…See More

Beer Money

I love my husband for many reasons, one particular reason being his interesting philosophy on life.Take for example his theory about “walkabout” money.  Colby believes that besides having lipstick and a driver’s license in a purse, there also needs to be hard cold cash.  Not that he carries around a purse and…See More

Hi Lanita, your writing style reminds me of the TV character Alison Dubois from the series Medium. She's my all time favourite female character at the moment! xx, isabelle

Hey, I wanted to thank you for the link. It went to my spam folder so I didn't find it right away. My daughter is almost a perfect model, but she has a very different background than the typical RAD kid, so I'm not sure what to think, but I've contacted her Doctor and I'm hoping round two will be more productive now that she is older and the problems are more pronounced. Thanks again!

Hi Lanita.  I visited your blog and loved the recent post.  I left a comment but am not sure it 'registered'  (I didn't see it afterwards).  So I am leaving it here too.  (Sorry it is so long - you REALLY got me thinking!)

As a mother of three (almost) grown children I know all about 'judgement'.  When I hear a screaming child I say to myself, 'the screaming is worse to the parent than it is to me' and it helps.  Sometimes, I offer solutions or at least suggestions - which often help.

Erica's story is also sad and all too common.  Aside from your loving home which she loves, I think she may also be attracted to the structure you provide for Elliott.  Kids need this structure, and while they sometimes (at least initially) fight it, I find (as a parent, teacher and school psychologist) that they embrace it as well.

My parenting view is much like yours.  We limited TV viewing to occasional supervised public television shows, videos on weekends and only educational computer games (this was in the '90's so things were a bit different and easier back then).  Like you I have also 'adopted' some of my kids' friends.  Both my kids and the friends have always appreciated it and I believe it made our family that much closer because there was so much more to share!

You are doing a great job and I look forward to reading more.  I hope you join/visit my blog (www.departingthetext.blogspot.com) as well.  I talk all about parenting and education, and your compassionate, level-headed thinking will enhance the discussions!

Happy holidays and all the best,
Meryl Jaffe PhD
