For some time, Bunny has been experiencing a reoccurring nightmare. She dreams monsters come in our house and eat our entire family, except for her. She is left alone with no parents, no home, and no place to go.

Late last summer, I wrote a blog, Rooster Envy, in which I described my general love for all things chicken and about a beautiful eight foot rooster I had found in Amarillo, TX. With four months to go until my birthday and Christmas, I dreamt about that large bird on a daily basis. He would look so cool suspended from the ceiling…he would look so amazing standing guard over our kitchen. Although I felt he…

I like to think of myself as a crafty person. I can cross-stitch, needlepoint, make stained-glass, sew on a button, and hot-glue anything as well as Martha Stewart, but there has always been one craft project that I miserably fail at…
Knitting.

Lanita Andrews said… Hey, I wanted to thank you for the link. It went to my spam folder so I didn't find it right away. My daughter is almost a perfect model, but she has a very different background than the typical RAD kid, so I'm not sure what to think, but I've contacted her Doctor and I'm hoping round two will be more productive now that she is older and the problems are more pronounced. Thanks again!
Meryl Jaffe said… Hi Lanita. I visited your blog and loved the recent post. I left a comment but am not sure it 'registered' (I didn't see it afterwards). So I am leaving it here too. (Sorry it is so long - you REALLY got me thinking!)
As a mother of three (almost) grown children I know all about 'judgement'. When I hear a screaming child I say to myself, 'the screaming is worse to the parent than it is to me' and it helps. Sometimes, I offer solutions or at least suggestions - which often help.
Erica's story is also sad and all too common. Aside from your loving home which she loves, I think she may also be attracted to the structure you provide for Elliott. Kids need this structure, and while they sometimes (at least initially) fight it, I find (as a parent, teacher and school psychologist) that they embrace it as well.
My parenting view is much like yours. We limited TV viewing to occasional supervised public television shows, videos on weekends and only educational computer games (this was in the '90's so things were a bit different and easier back then). Like you I have also 'adopted' some of my kids' friends. Both my kids and the friends have always appreciated it and I believe it made our family that much closer because there was so much more to share!
You are doing a great job and I look forward to reading more. I hope you join/visit my blog (www.departingthetext.blogspot.com) as well. I talk all about parenting and education, and your compassionate, level-headed thinking will enhance the discussions!
Happy holidays and all the best,
Meryl Jaffe PhD
