Going Through Academia Withdrawals...

I'm thinking a lot more these days about persuing an MFA in creative writing. I don't know, I guess I just think maybe I'd have a slightly better chance at getting my poetry published if those three letters could appear in my queries. I resent that a little bit, but on the upside, even if I don't get published right away, I could start applying for teaching positions, either as a high school english teacher or better yet--a small state college or university.

Do you ever find things in books that you'd forgotten about? I do. All the time. I find bits of paper, old check stubs, pressed flowers, lengths of ribbon, etc. And sometimes I find something more conventional: actual bookmarks. I buy a nice bookmark from time to time--you know the nice ones you see at Barnes & Noble sometimes, with cool artwork on them, covered in a plastic sleeve. Today I found just such a bookmark in my copy of Robert Wrigley's "Reign of Snakes."  The bookmark bears Mike… Continue

Posted on July 1, 2011 at 8:09pm 0 Comments

l love when a novel's narrator has that certain something that just invites you into his/her interior world from the very first sentence. I'm currently reading Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh, and the narrator of this book is exactly like that. The narrator ofBrideshead is Charles Ryder, and he reminds me of Stephen Daedalus from A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses by James Joyce, a narrator who also has that special something. I suppose it's… Continue

Hi Laura and welcome to She Writes!  We are so glad you are here.  If you need help getting started, take a look at our very helpfully named "Getting Started" page, and don't forget to browse the very popular Groups.  You can start your own if you don't see one that suits your particular interest, though at this time there are more than 250 to choose from.

Enjoy, and warm best,

Kamy (Founder, She Writes)
