Regina, I know *just* that relief you felt when you decided to self-publish.  That's just how I felt too.  And a huge surge of creativity as well.  I hadn't even realized how much I'd held myself back, with the idea of…

Regina, thanks!  Yup, you pretty much nailed it with Jodie, lol!  I'm glad to hear she's coming across clearly then. The title comes from a line of text in one of the middle chapters. :)

Laura Rae Amos replied to the discussion 'Past vs. Present Tense' in the group Novelists (Struggling or Not)
I find it odd your professor told you to use it sparingly - did she mean within a past tense work?  I don't think I've seen that done before.  From what I understand, it should either be used throughout consistently, or not used…

Laura Rae Amos replied to the discussion 'Simultaneous WIP's' in the group Novelists (Struggling or Not)
I juggle several WIPs too.  Sometimes when I've done all I can with one, it's that space away from it that allows me to see it with fresh eyes again.  Also, go where the passion is!  I spent a very long time working on a…

Laura Rae Amos replied to the discussion 'Which perspective do you write from' in the group Novelists (Struggling or Not)
I like, and have used, pretty much anything.  I even like 2nd person, which pretty much nobody else likes besides me (and Lorrie Moore in Self-Help!). ;) Most often I write in a close, limited 3rd, or 1st person.  I think the difference…

This is a fun thread idea! I've seen quite a few openings here that would definitely keep me reading! Here are my first few, from the literary/romantic-comedy I'm publishing this spring, Exactly Where They'd Fall. Jodie hated…

Also, for any of you who use smart phones, there are notebook applications you can download, which I find very handy for this kind of thing.  I use one called GooMemo, which can sync up with my Google Docs, and then I can just copy/paste the…

Maisie! Glad to see you here!  Even though I've been a member for a while, I'm only just now finding the time to really dig into this site, so we can still be newbies here together, lol! :D

Laura, I just opened the door to the novelist group for you - welcome! You might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion if you're not too uncomfortable talking about what you're working on. And we do a live chat every Wednesday; hope you can join us for that!

I've been surprised at how many people I ended knowing on this site. Have you thought about joing the group "Blogging about Books and Writing?" We're doing another Blogger Ball this weekend which is a great chance to meet others via their blogs as well as drive traffic to your own. You can find the group here and the Blogger Ball info here.

The courage of publishing a memoir

"Why call it a memoir. Why can't it be a novel?"  Honestly, I understand my father's point of view.  Just a few months ago an ex of mine released a cd worldwide  in which he featured several songs about me and our breakup.  While all the songs…See More
