Moments of Sheer Radiance

When you think of the elements of a good piece of fiction you may consider character, plot, tone, metaphor and symbolism, etc. I would like to introduce another necessary element in literary fiction; I call it “moments of sheer radiance.”A moment of sheer radiance strikes the essence of the prose and comes as close to poetry as prose permits. In my own collection of books I underline or highlight these passages, these fundamental truths of humanity where a passage is written so well it spans…See More

The Stuff of Suffering

August 5, 2011 I had a student ask me once why literature is depressing. “Almost everything we've read, quality literature, but depressing as all hell.” It's a fair question. I can't remember what I told him, but I hope it was this: Yes, most of good literature is depressing because it is about suffering. And there is a lot of stuff in suffering. Happiness and contentment is fairly straightforward. Suffering is always unfolding, facet upon facet. Suffering and all its stuff, is about…See More

Profile Information

Who I am:
I am a writer who loves language and has spent a great deal of time in the world of imagination. I champion imagination and the arts; I seek to contribute, to have my voice heard and my characters known. I am a feminist, although not a femi-nazi. I do like men; I married one, I spent the first part of my life in the male dominated field of structural engineering and have come to know all too well the discrepancies between men and women. Perhaps this is what pushed me to create mostly female characters. Perhaps it was being born into an Italian-American family where it was imperative you marry or perish (or worse, be pitied) or baptized into the Catholic Church, where only a man could relay the preachings of God. I write fiction, poetry, and essays and teach at a Community College. I have an MFA from Vermont College and write a blog, which, as of now, no one follows. I cringe at self-promotion, and yet, if I want to contribute to the literary canon, I must get over this. I am hoping your site will help me do that. I have three fiction manuscripts I am looking to publish and one volume of poetry.

Inspiration and Influences

About thirteen years ago I wrote and published a novel called The Jewel of the Lotus Flower. On the cover I wrote “A raw, provocative story about coming of age and identity.” It was raw alright, because it didn't have an editor. It also had a lot of stream of consciousness writing in it, because at the time I thought stream of consciousness writing was cool. I have since gone back to…

The Role of Doubt in an Artist's Life

A shorter version of this essay was published in North Shore Art Throb several years ago. Since doubt seems to be creeping up again, I thought I would put it here, in the blog.
