New ideas… new stories... New year

Firstly, Happy New Year!Since I am writing a new book very shortly, I thought that I would blog a little about my process, and how I work. Each writer's process is completely different, and it's up to the individuals to create their own process.Dream up a situation:- An example of this is of when I happen to be in Australia at the time, and I had been reading all sorts of articles about a ghost yacht off the…See More

Inspirational things

For many years I have collected and saved things that I find inspirational in my life. In fact, I think I might be an ‘inspiration’ hoarder. There are things like this all over my house that I just need to look at and find something that makes me happy within them. These are things like photographs of my grandmother who was an incredibly talented violinist, my grandfather’s war medals that I have the miniatures of, candles that I light when I am writing, artwork, and of course there are many,…See More

Writer’s Block and Foundation Stones

A lot of writers suffer from something commonly known as ‘Writer’s Block’. I have in fact used the term myself. But that was back when I couldn’t identify why it was happening.Then I discovered that it wasn’t writer’s block at all. I suffered from something a little different… something I like to call ‘Middle Book Blues’. I’m pretty sure that I didn’t coin that phrase… but that’s what it’s called to me.Middle Book Blues is when I get to the middle stages of the book that I am writing, and I…See More

Dramatic Radio Fodder

This morning I was listening to the radio, like I do every morning on my way to work. I specifically listen to the station that plays music, and then I switch over to Newstalk at 6am to get a decent news update for the day.However, this morning on my usual music channel, the hosts were talking to people about the drama in their lives. The subject was – ‘And the dish ran away with the spoon.’ Callers would then ring in, and tell the radio hosts and listeners all around the country of their…See More

Bringing your characters to life

Recently I have been reading KM Weiland’s book ‘Crafting Unforgettable Characters’. I have to say, I have really enjoyed it. Weiland puts quite a different spin on character development. This post also has a lot of my own advice in it as well, but seriously recommend that you read KM Weiland’s book. You can find her blog link on my blogroll to the right hand side of this page. This post is mainly a quick snapshot of parts of the book, and there are many details that I have left out – on…See More

Profile Information

Who I am:
I am a writer from New Zealand. I have lived in New Zealand my whole life, but has spent much of my time travelling – and even more of my time dreaming about where I would like to go next!

To cater to my writing and travel passions, I am currently studying Travel Journalism with the New Zealand Writer’s College.

Writing became a real passion for me four years ago when some family issues rose, and I found it a creative emotional relief from the everyday pressures.
As a writer you generally write a lot of what you know. The majority of my books so far, have common themes that remotely link them together.

Surfing: There is always some sort of surfing activity.
Environment: My books generally have some sort of environmental focus weaved throughout the fiction.
Design Elements: Due to my designer background, the locations and houses that I write about have a descriptive design edge.
All my books are thriller based, but they also have different sub-genre's in them as well. Some are written for Young Adult, and others are not.

Professionally, I am based in the world of Project Management. My other interests include family and friends, surfing, and snowboarding. I have been married for five years to Michael, my constant supporting rock, who always stands by my side - and never reads my work!

For further information about me, my writing, books, and writing advice – visit my website: http://leighkhunt.weebly.com
Or if you really want to get to know me - visit my blog: http://parchmentplace.wordpress.com
Books I've written, anthologies I've contributed to, and any scripts or plays I've authored:
Currently an unpublished writer of:
* The Legacy
* The Proposition
* Never Enough
* The Mediterranean Source
* Talent
* Talent II

I currently have another five novels in the pipeline as well - 2 of which, I am close to finishing.

Published author of a short story in an anthology - Tales for Canterbury.
Media outlets that I currently write for:
I am currently studying Travel Journalism...
I also blog, and review books:
http://parchmentplace.wordpress.com/
http://theothersideofthepage.wordpress.com/
http://parchmentleaves.wordpress.com/
My writing is:
Fiction, Journalism, Blog Posts, Lit Crit
Outlets where I review books, TV, or film:
I generally review Advanced Reading Copies from publishers. These are reviewed on Goodreads, Amazon, two book blogs, Shelfari as well as directly with the publishers and authors themselves.
Services I offer to other writers:
I am more than happy to read other writer's work, and give an honest opinion. Critiquing takes up a lot more time, so therefore I will only critique on a case by case basis. I still need to have time to write my own work :-)
I'm part of these writers' groups or salons:
New Zealand Writer's College, and a small private group called Writing Warriors - a great supporting group of outstanding writers. I also belong to a small New Zealand critique group - The Inklings.
My professional associations:
New Zealand Society of Authors
Romance Writers of New Zealand

Leigh, I just opened the door to the novelist group for you - welcome! You might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion if you're not too uncomfortable talking about what you're working on. And we do a live chat every Wednesday; hope you can join us for that!

Hi Leigh, I know what you mean, it can be overwhelming. I suggest you join the group "Bloggers Let's make it Work", you can post your latest blog posts (also exterior on your own living blog) in the group discussion "What did you blog today" or in the general comments. Julie Jeffs is/was(?) the coordinator, she'll get your blog listed as well. Also look at the groups your friends have joined for inspiration. You can find like minded or directed writers there. One thing about a platform like this is that it can slurp time ;-) Keep on doing the Write thing!

Hi Leigh, and welcome to She Writes!  We are so glad to have you join our community.  If you are looking for a good way to get started, try visiting our very helpfully named "Getting Started" page, which should tell you a lot of what you need to know.  Browsing the groups is also a good way to get going; there are groups for just about every interest, and you can also start your own. You probably know this already, but you aren't our first New Zealand girl!

Warm best,

Kamy (Founder, She Writes)
