Pop Culture References in Writing

Do pop culture references create a common reading experience, or make a story inaccessible? In my novel, the narrator’s mother has a “fabulous plastic hoopla” where the saleslady extols the virtues of Tupperware to fawning women drinking vodka-spiked punch with a scum-like foam of quivering pastel sherbet. The point of the scene is not the burping storage containers, but the daughter’s uncanny observations of the women in the 60’s, and how, “with fixed smiles and rustling nylons, they preen…See More

WHY DO WE WRITE? The answers may surprise you!

"Fiction is supposed to be, forgive me, less shitty than life. Better than life. It is supposed to make more sense than life. That’s one of the reasons we read, one of the reasons we write. We want to feel we are forgiven and that there is hope…. Redemption is and always has been a staple of American fiction." ~Author Molly Giles, in Odds on Ends, “The Writer’s Chronicle”When I posed the question “Why do you write” on Twitter, Facebook and this blog, reasons similar to the one above showed up,…See More

Writing No Orderly Process

After sweating bullets of self-doubt while doing some major scene shuffling in The Real Story manuscript, I’m getting excited. This feels right. The biggest challenge was when I took it out of chronological order, so that the story no longer opens with the narrator Angelica as a seventeen-year old and subsequently follows her life for the next twenty years. Now, it begins with a dramatic scene from a more contemporary part of the book, years after she has learned the horrible family secret that…See More

Thanks for your interest in the book, Linda! I'm actually hoping to write about the pre-publication process for She Writes. But I have to say, so far, Simon & Schuster has been great. They've sent galleys out to numerous print, radio and tv contacts, sold the first serial rights to "O" magazine (an excerpt of the book will appear in the March issue) and was instrumental in getting the book picked as one of Barnes & Noble's Discover Great New Writers series which means three months of front of store placement this summer. Not that I don't have a few petty complaints, but overall I'm feeling pretty grateful. Actually I'm still in shock that my book sold at all. Not to state the obvious, but publishing is a bitch...
