The Neighbor

Neighbors: We all have them—some close and not so far and some at quite a distance, but the ones that live across the street from us are observers of some of the most routine or personal elements of our very lives. Such is the case with Georgeann and her family. The husband appears to be a quiet, sociable man, and the kids are unrecognizable from any other grown children, still at home after completing school. Each has a relatively new car and fashionable clothing and says nothing when they…See More

First Fornication

Brigantine Beach, New Jersey, Age 17. My best friend, Abby and I walked the sands of the shore and talked about outr upcoming schoolyear, all the fun things we did during the summer and the concerts we attended. Just last night, we saw Frankie Avalon and Fabien on the Ocean City Boardwalk in Concert with several other famous rock and rollers. Abby was probably the only one who knew how much I loved Frankie Avalon. I never missed a concert I could make because of distance. And there he was, on…See More

On their heads are yarmulkes and fedoras that cover them. The women keep up with them from behind. They also walk together with less sober faces, expressing their respect for each other’s special clothing, purchased especially for the holiday.Men…See More

Will I Ever Become More Savvy?

I’m mad as hell and don’t know what to do about it. I’m thinking far too much about it and want to put the whole situation away. Perhaps you can help me.Normally, I take the heated issues that take up too much brain span and put them away to consider when I’m not so angry. But this one has me wrapped up in too much rage to tuck away. This is what happened:When my mother in law died over two years ago, she left a considerable amount of jewelry for my two daughters. Outlaws? No, The Inlaws!

Just an hour away from our house live my daughter’s inlaws. A lifetime of two cultures away is the bigger divide. They are German by birth—born in the city of Manheim and raised under the tutelage of mothers who were estranged from their men due to WW II. The mother was the child of a sea captain; the father was the son of a German prisoner of war, held by the Russians for ten years. Both of these people were born during the war and grew up in the shroud of confusion that followed. As children,…See More

The Toasted One

What do you do, or can you do when you notice that of your oldest friends has become a drunk? Not a whole lot, I’m afraid. It’s hard to see someone who had a fine education, great mind and wicked sense of humor until the past few years when booze flooded her brain synapses. Now the bottle has circumvented any substance in the person I knew and valued so much. It’s not that I haven’t attempted to steer her away from drinking when I’m at her home. When I’ve been at her house and I have to drive…See More

Six Inches!

When I walk into a shoe store the only number I generally have in mind is eight and a half inches—my shoe size. And so that’s where I go to hunt and peck for my "Pedi-Jewels." I know what styles I wear, the colors I love and the shapes that don’t suit me at all.But this time, I looked to my side and spotted a pair of Cardinal red satin pumps, decked in crystal, with high, high, spiky heels. I estimated the height of the heels to be about six inches…far longer and taller than I ever imagined on…See More
