"It really tickles me how literary critics love to take stabs at memoirs for being too "confessional" while giving novels a pass, because, after all, they're fiction and can do whatever they want. Memoirs as literature have to meet…"

What I learned about writing (and teaching) memoirs in 2009

1. Everyone, I mean Everyone, has a story to tell.2. People just want to be heard.3. Writing really does heal, if you look for the lessons in even the most painful experiences.4. Despite the naysayers, those who call memoirs "confessional" or self-absorbed, they are as popular as ever. People love to read about how others deal with life.5. Memoir and personal essays are my favorite form or creative writing. I always come back to it.See More

Linda,

Delighted to have you in the novelist group – please accept my belated welcome (I’ve been finishing a novel on deadline, and traveling to boot).

If you haven’t done so already, you might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion.

We do a live chat at 1 EST on the first Wednesdays of each month, with instructions on how to participate in the "Our Water Cooler" box near the top of the group page. And we save the wall for discussion, but welcome links to helpful blog posts on the “Links to Helpful Blog Posts for Writers” discussion thread and to published books in the “Our Published Novels” one.

I hope you’ll enjoy the group.

Hi Linda - this is my first comment, actually my first entry into She Writes, although I've been getting mail for months --I agree with you about the fact that people are interested in how other people deal with their own lives. Each life is a private, often painful, uncharted experience, and a memoir is a window through which one can glimpse inside someone else's world.
My most recent work, DYING UNFINISHED, I describe as "terrain between memoir and fiction."

"The two rules that I keep in mind as I'm posting to social media are: 1. is this dignified? 2. would it horribly embarrass my teenaged daughter? If the answer to 1. is yes and the answer to 2. is no, then I go ahead. Otherwise, I censor."
