Follow Up on the call for White Ambassadors

Fellow She Writer Amy, who blogs at The ManyShadesofLove sent me this message in response to my Call for White Ambassadors post. I've already raised the call for a Shelf Elf Revolution to combat "segbookgation" at the book stores and libraries, but Amy's post makes me think I still have a lot to do. But I am not giving up. I've received fabulous reviews of Substitute Me… Continue

Countdown to Publication:Welcome to the Morning After

Hi She Writers,

Yesterday, August 24, I officially became a novelist. I made it to Pub Day. The book made it to store shelves and was released from download embargo.I received more than 45 emails of congratulations, a bunch of Facebook 'likes' and a whole lot of Tweets wishing me a happy Pub Day. By the end of the day, after I disseminated my first "From the Desk of Lori L. Tharps" newsletter (for those of you new to email marketing check out MadMimi.com) I'd also received two new… Continue

Countdown to Publication: Focus on the Good

Posted on August 18, 2010 at 6:38am 2 Comments

Hi She Writers,

I’m writing to you from a quiet part of the world where I’ve come for a spiritual retreat. I needed to get away from real life for a few days so I could mentally prepare myself for the upcoming school year, transition to a new school for my kids, oh, and the official launch of Substitute Me next week.

Right before I left, I was simultaneously trying to figure out where to hold my release party, convince my publisher to send me to Miami in October, and… Continue

Countdown to Publication: Other Venues

Posted on August 11, 2010 at 6:45am 6 Comments

Once upon a time, soon after I’d left the protective walls of my single-sex college in New England, I became a publicist in Manhattan. I worked for a high profile, multinational company that boasted several different divisions. My client list included a major candy company, a family friendly cruise line and a podiatrist who wanted to give Dr. Scholl’s a run for his money. I hated my job but I learned a lot about running a successful publicity campaign.

Almost twenty years later I’m… Continue

OMG, today was hard. Why? because in my frenzy to write, I've left off a lot of those little details that help you tell the story. So today, I actually went back and filled in some pieces of the story. Like you, I also went back to my notebook…

I'm with you Andrea. It's so hard. But feels good to be in good company. I'm supposed to be writing now, but as you can see, I'm procrastinating with you. I took the weekend off, which was bad. Now I'm behind. I like your…

Thanks, Amy! And this is such a silly practice. My book is about two women, one White and one Black. So why does my book end up in the AA section? Is it because I'm Black? I have no problem with my book being shelved in the AA section, but why…

Lori, You are so welcome! I still can't believe where the book was located. I literally stood at the computer and laughed when I saw it was filed in the African American section! Not a "funny ha ha" laugh, but more like a "you…

Hi Lori! We met at the Loving Day conference (I made fishbird, a belated thank you for linking to it on your blog), anyway, this is a crazy coincidence because I just finished Kinky Gazpacho and then saw you in the She Writes newsletter! I'll add you as a friend and send you a longer note later. Hurray! Congrats on Substitute Me.

Thanks, Lori. I know the feeling of trying to be funny and it falling on flat ears. When my husband (who is Japanese) and I (who am lapsed-Jewish) agreed to have a blessing in front of my mother's rabbi, I agreed only because he marries gay couples (a big social/human rights issue for me). I made some quip that this must the first time he has ever married "two JAPs who are straight" and he didn't even crack a smile. I was pretty pleased with myself, though.

Hi Lori. TY for the friend invite. Congratulations on your new book! Looking forward to reading it. I loved loved loved the first memoir! Are you doing any DC workshops in 2010 or 2011? I always talk about how your All Souls Workshop in Fall 2008 changed my writing. Your love of six-word memoirs really helped me. Thanks.
