Nobody Wants to Read about Women Over Fifty - True or False?

Yes, that is what I've heard. I don't want to believe it, because I want to read about women my age and all the challenges they're facing. I like non-fiction, too, but I want good stories.Besides the fact of my own preferences, I think it's an untrue statement because of all the anecdotal information in my head: When you're hanging around a pool or community area, which gender is more likely to be seen reading? Do Women Become Invisible As They Age?

Do you think it's true that older women become invisible? I keep hearing it, but I don’t know if I believe it. I think invisibility is like a new car: once you buy it, you see that model everywhere.Recently I read a post wherein an older woman (OW) claimed to be invisible because, while she stood at a counter talking with a clerk, a younger woman came up and got the clerk’s attention. And this happened on two occasions! The OW was greatly offended. I wasn’t there, but maybe the intruder was…See More

Bad Advice for Boomers from Author Susan Jacoby

My greatest fear is sleepwalking through my life - finding out at the end of it that I’ve made some ridiculous miscalculation and wasted a great gift. So it seemed like a smart idea to read “Never Say Die: The Myth and Marketing of the New Old Age” by Susan Jacoby. Bill Moyers, who I…

View of the Editor's In Box

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 1:48pm 0 Comments

As a writer, I worry over every syllable, every punctuation mark, etc. But as an editor I can't believe the crap I receive. One poet sent an attachment that consisted of over 100 pages of poems. Another writer forwarded a query that he'd previously sent to another publication, and said query contained the previous editor's rejection! The right margin on one short story was off the page, so you couldn't even read the end of the line. And so on.

Yes, I know. Maybe I need to move to a… Continue

Julia, I very much enjoyed your blog post, it was interesting and thought provoking. I agree with your comment here, that it could lead to an even deeper ideas and thoughts about technology etc... My blogging friends and I have been having similar discussions. Your post also reminded me of the main character in the book "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield. Have you read it? It's a Wonderful story. The woman in the story likes to do the same as you. She and her father own a book shop and sell mainly obscure books. She likes to do biographies of lesser or unknown writes. Anyhow.... felt compelled to comment.

Thank you for the friend request Lynne.

I'm a big library user and got my copy from the library (can't possibly buy every book I want to read). Just like the Internet brought a revolution to music industry gatekeepers, I absolutely believe it is and should be happening in publishing. I know that is heresy in a lot of circles. Let me know what you think, if you get a chance, after you read it.
