Profile Information

Who I am:
I am the daughter of Puerto Rican migrants to Chicago and grew up in Humboldt Park, Chicago's version of el barrio. Because I knew so little Puerto Rican history, I dreamed about Puerto Rico. Researching the island and culture for my novel If I Bring You Roses was my way of discovering it. I felt connected to my ancestors and the island as I'd never felt my whole life growing up in Chicago where I was never Puerto Rican enough.
I grew up in the 70s and back then I swore that I would never marry but I've been married to the same guy for many years and we have two children. Our daughter Alyssa is my dream daughter--the girl I wanted to be--independent, unafraid, impossibly creative--and a second generation feminist. Luckily, she didn't have to fight the gender roles I did as a Puerto Rican female and doesn't have the scars to show for it. Our son is about to graduate from high school and attend Yale which is a major accomplishment in our family because their grandparents on both sides were factory workers.

I Followed Beckett To My Dream

Posted on July 27, 2011 at 9:00pm 6 Comments

When I first began to work on IF I BRING YOU ROSES, I was overwhelmed by the enormity of my ambition.  I recall how I stood in the middle of my office surrounded by all the books that I loved. How could I ever hope to achieve what Anton Chekhov, Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald had? I was a mere mortal.  I couldn’t think of how to start so I prayed—for guidance to research and learn all that I needed to know to tell my story and—for the talent to…

Hi again!

Have fun with the college trip. I'll be incommunicado from 9/1-9/16, so I hope to catch up with you after that. I'll make a note on my calendar. I'm so impressed you finished your book and are on the tour. I hope you have lots of success with it!

The Importance of Ironing as a name for an entire book, not a bad idea. Given your enthusiasm for the title, I'm curious as to whether the content of the piece lived up to your expectations?
