Profile Information
- Who I am:
- I’m an independent research sociologist, writer and lecturer. I earned my Ph.D. and M.A. from University of Chicago in the Social Sciences, and a B.S. in Psychology. My interests include adoption issues, the changing American family, regrets and subsequent choices during life’s key transitions, and creative non-fiction.
I’m co-author and editor of my mother’s Holocaust memoir, The Seamstress: A Memoir of Survival, have published a number of non-fiction short stories and essays as well as an academic book about institutional prestige and long term career success.
These days I’m concluding research for a sociology book and also putting some final touches on my short story collection that might be ready for “prime time” in 2012. I particularly enjoy conducting research methodology workshops for writers of non-fiction and presenting to book clubs and young adult students.
When not involved in research or writing sociology, I focus on creative non-fiction, memoir and on a non-academic diversion – food and cooking. I’m co-host the culinary website, www.expendableedibles.com , the blog www.expendabledibles.com/blog and have published food related articles.

I worked for the State years ago and my last job with them was in a unit called "Adoption and Related Services." I loved that job more than almost any other that I've had. It was challenging, because my caseload consisted mostly of adolescents who, in some cases, had spent years in foster care. Anyway, this isn't about me, it's about connecting you with Gayle ;) I know you'll find their website very informative ! She also recommended a book for you. The title is ... if memory serves me correctly, geesh ! ... "Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew." Gayle said that her adopted daughter (who is an adult now) cried when she read it.
