Reflections on the revolution - Part 1

I was one of the first people arrested on January 25. Ok, let me correct that. What happened to me (along with a group of friends) was illegal detention. It's common knowledge in Egypt that you should never go to any demonstration alone, because alone, it's easier to get caught by police. So I agreed with a group of about 20 friends (approximately 10 men and 10 women) that we would meet in a cafe near where one of the demonstrations would take place. So there we were, a large group, talking a…See More

URGENT: The Egyptian government is waging war on the people

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 2:11pm 10 Comments

Dear all,

This is completely off-topic, but the situation is desperate. As you may have heard on the news, the Egyptian population is rising up against 30 years of tyranny, dictatorship, corruption, torture, and oppression. The government is, as expected, fighting back. The protests started on January 25 and were peaceful, but we were subjected to water cannons, beatings, mass arrests, tear gas (the nastiest stuff I've ever experienced), and rubber bullets (as well as live ammunition… Continue

An Interview with Shelina Zahra Janmohamed - Part 2

Last week I published part 1 of this interview, in which Shelina Zahra Janmohamed talked about her book Love in a Headscarf, why she wrote it, and how it was received.

This week, Janmohamed delves into her own writing process, talks about receiving rejection letters, and offers advice to writers.

I…

An interview with Shelina Zahra Janmohamed - Part 1

Posted on December 10, 2010 at 1:32am 1 Comment

I’d heard a lot about Shelina Zahra Janmohamed’s Love in a Headscarf before I read it. It was supposed to be about finding love and a husband, in a chick-lit fashion, but it was also about Divine love. How on earth did she manage that?

Janmohamed is a young British author and commentator who caught the attention of people searching for a Muslim voice through her writings on www.spirit21.co.uk. A blogger since March 2006, Janmohamed’s writings… Continue

Marwa, thank you for your bravery. We are watching and cheering you on. Please continue to keep us informed. After living in Viet-Nam 68-70, the news brings memories of previous struggles. I am looking for a book, I think by Naguib Mahfouz, which I read to my Middle School students when they were studying A STONE IN MY HAND. Do you have a favorite Egyptian writer? As my professor from graduate school said, "Grist for the mill." You have a wonderful opportunity to share your experiences with the world. Stay strong. Stay safe. May angels surround you. I remember you mentioning you'd love to find a good mentor ->

Congratulations to my exceptional writing mentor, Pearl Luke, for her continued excellence as an adviser. This past year, 2 of 5 from our novel immersion group (including myself who won in 2009) have placed in the top 3 in the PEN/Nob Hill Soul-making Literary competition, novel excerpt category! Thanks Pearl, for your intrepid guidance. SheWriters, if you're looking for a top-notch mentor, look no further...

Re: Denying Your Creativity Can Kill You - great post Marwa. As a lazy Daoist and practitioner of Daoist medicine (widely known as "Chinese" medicine), I think of the mind-body connection like this - the mind is intrinsic in the body and the body in the mind. Consider a driver and her car, the car (body) is essentially inert without the activation of the driver (mind) and visa versa; the driver (mind) would have nothing to drive without a functioning car (body). And if the car is banged up from an accident or runs badly from the wrong kind of gas or oil, this too affects the driver's ability to drive the car. Alternately, if the driver is tired or drunk or emotional or inexperienced, say, she cannot drive the car in an efficient manner, and so on. All manner of confusion results from disharmony of either, for a disharmony in one is intrinsic to a disharmony in the other.

@ Marwa - Thanks for reading and for your enthusiastic response! My novel is nowhere near being finished and publication is but a snowflake in a blizzard at the moment!

What about your novel?
