Hi Megan,
I'll be reading from my new memoir, The Possibility of Everything (www.thepossibilityofeverything.com) and talking about memoir writing at Warwick's Books in La Jolla at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10. Hoping that you can make it--would love to meet some SheWrites members in the San Diego area. I'm up in LA, myself.
All best,
Hope
I have been thinking about getting out of my PhD with a Masters as year 4 is coming to an end. Was that an acceptable option within your faculty? I have broached the subject within my school but it's never been done before and I get the feeling that I would be persona non grata if I pursued that option. Truth is I don't really mind because I just want to finish off the damn thing :) I would appreciate any ting you have to say about what that was like for you.
Kind regards,
Hi Megan -- I've started a group you may be interested in -- Writer, PhD*. Come check it out... we'd love to have you join the conversation. All best, Heather Hewett
Hi Megan--isn't it wonderful? I just knew you would like being here. I love your photo--with the beach behind you? It's a delight. I hope everyone there, large and small, are doing well.
This brings to mind the recent NYT op-ed by Joanne Lipman, "The Mismeasure of Woman" (Oct. 24, 2009). She talks about how it is the subtler messages in our culture that keep women (and, I would add, people of color) from truly…

Hi Hope, Thanks so much for the La Jolla invite! I'm going to try my darndest to get my infant to sleep so I can get down there in time! I'd love to meet you and hear your wisdom... Warmly, Megan
HI Heather, Got your comment/question about the PhD thing. Well, the short answer is that leaving the fold wasn't easy at the time, but I have absolutely no regrets! If you'd like to talk more, feel free to email me offline. Warmly,Megan

Saw you on Writer PhD group and checked your page -- I was a Comm grad student as well (at UW-Madison and UCSD - Media/Cultural Studies) and presented at NCA years back! Nice to "meet" you and welcome to SheWrites!
I keep trying to get away from academia, but I just can't! Actually, my parents are academics, so it's hopeless (and I do still think like an academic in many ways!). I have "half a PhD," I like to say (not quite ABD), and also…
