"Again, thank you. I'm heading to the Harlem Book Fair, which should fit my market pretty well. It's the first book fair in a major city, so I'm excited about it."

"It takes awhile to build a following. Just make certain the book fairs you attend are ones that fit your books. Also, returning is important once you become established. I do about 6 to 7 events year, across several states."

Experience with a publicist?
Has anyone used a publicist? What's your experience been, and how do they charge, by the hour or per placement/booking they get for you? A few people have said I should get a publicist, but I'm not sure how to go about it. My novel was published last year by a very small press, so the marketing support is, well, there isn't any. :-) Any thoughts?See More

- Who I am:
- Melanie S. Hatter had two big publishing successes in 2011. Her novelette, Taking the Shot, was published in electronic format by Etopia Press, and her novel, The Color of My Soul, was published in softcover by the Washington Writers’ Publishing House.
Melanie has a background in newspaper journalism and makes a living in corporate communications. She received a bachelor’s degree from Hampton University and graduated from the master’s in writing program at Johns Hopkins University. Her essays have appeared in Moxie magazine, and the now defunct ACE Dialogue and Emerge magazines.
Melanie’s short stories have appeared in The Lipstick Pages and Diverse Voices Quarterly. Melanie’s short story, “Obsessed with Claudia,” won the May 2000 First Annual Romantic Tales Writing Contest. She is currently working on a collection of short stories.
Melanie lives in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

National Black Writers Conference Was Fabulous!

I hopped on the Megabus on Thursday night (March 29) headed for New York City where my sister (by choice, not by blood), Amanda was waiting for me. (The bus cost me $16.50, and with gas prices as they are, I couldn’t have been happier!). I stayed with Amanda in her lovely home in Queens and we drove into Brooklyn on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the Eleventh National Black Writers Conference. We had the best time!
