Should You Tell Children about Animal Abuse?

Posted on September 28, 2010 at 9:07am 0 Comments

After getting off the school bus, my 9-year old checked the mailbox before coming in the front door. I heard the school bus beeping, which is my cue that Jordon is home. Jordon likes to check the mail. So do I. We both like getting letters—remember letters?

***Warning*** the next sentence is gravely upsetting. If you want to read more, see:…

Teaching Kids About Animals

While most kids are indoors playing video games, 9-year old Enzo Monfre can be found outdoors observing bugs, hedgehogs, and other critters that are native to his Texas backyard. It’s not that Enzo does not like video games; on the contrary, he enjoys them. He just prefers to be among nature.

“Animals are really cool, and some are weird in a cool way,” he explains. A few of his favorites are insects, snakes—such as pythons, constrictors, and… Continue

5 Reasons Why Cats Need Their Claws

Posted on March 9, 2010 at 7:02am 0 Comments

Those of you who know me, know that I adore cats—claws and all. I would never declaw a cat. Simply put, it’s wrong. The operation is painful, and it has been likened to cutting off the first knuckles of a human hand.

Cats, unlike humans, don’t have opposable thumbs. They use their claws to grab things. If you ever tossed a toy to a kitty, you can see her grasp onto it with her claws. Cats also scratch to remove the dead outer layer of their claws. And yes, they like to scratch. If,… Continue

Saving Endangered Elephants

It’s easy to assume that something that lives in a foreign country thousands of miles away will always be here for us. And that one day when we’ve made enough money, collected enough air miles, and put in enough hours, we’ll be able to hop on a plane to see these magnificent creatures in the flesh.

Fixing Stray Cat Populations

Posted on March 3, 2010 at 10:19am 0 Comments

Cats are perfect baby makers. Each female cat can have four litters a year, and produce between three and five kittens each cycle. That’s a lot of stray cats. It’s hard calculating the exact number of strays in the United States.

Stray dogs are much more noticeable than stray cats because cats are better able to hide from sight. Still, many are visible. So visible that it deeply bothered Karn Myers and Mark Dodge, the husband and wife team behind FixNation, a nonprofit with the… Continue

Good to hear from you, and sorry about your allergies. I need to write a story about allergies and cats. I know so many people with allergies. Glad you are busy.

Thanks Michele! I would love to write an article about penguins for your blog sometime. Why don't I check back in with you about this after I have things wrapped up with my book. Great blog, btw! Would love to link to it (once I figure out how to do so). And I'll look forward to having time to read the book you published last year about working with animals - right up my alley!

Hi Michele! Well, I JUST started my blog, so there's not a whole lot there yet, but it does have a link to my FB fan page, which has more info about penguins and my work. My blog URL is www.thepenguinlady.wordpress.com. My website also has links to articles about my more recent work. Have JUST joined SheWrites well, and have not had time yet to add anything - busy finishing up the last bits and pieces of my manuscript. In fact, I should be at the library right now! Looking forward to chatting some more. Take care.
