- Who I am:
- I am British, but also a newly minted US citizen. A hardcore volunteer, mother of two girls, Scottish Country Dancer, tech addict. My career started with a PhD in history (on the incarceration of girls in 19th century England) and two years thinking about becoming an archivist. That didn't happen - good choice! Formerly a policy advisor and speechwriter in the UK Ministry of Justice, and more recently the Associate Director of the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University.

Just lately, I have been thinking about writing as activism. I was fortunate enough to get an opinion piece published by the San Francisco Chronicle on June 6, about faulty priorities in women's prisons:
