Profile Information

Who I am:
I am British, but also a newly minted US citizen. A hardcore volunteer, mother of two girls, Scottish Country Dancer, tech addict. My career started with a PhD in history (on the incarceration of girls in 19th century England) and two years thinking about becoming an archivist. That didn't happen - good choice! Formerly a policy advisor and speechwriter in the UK Ministry of Justice, and more recently the Associate Director of the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University.

First Steps in the World of Opinion

Just lately, I have been thinking about writing as activism.  I was fortunate enough to get an opinion piece published by the San Francisco Chronicle on June 6, about faulty priorities in women's prisons:
