The Bitch: Norman Mailer on Women Writers

[cross-posted from Millicent and Carla Fran]

Courtesy of Carla Fran, my co-blogger. If you need a giggle and a snort with your coffee, read on:

Norman Mailer is a self-mythologizer, very much in love with the idea of the hungover writer who understands the virility of being. Writing is dangerous: you risk alcoholism, depression and madness if you let yourself go into your art. Writing is dull: only s… Continue

American Writers

"There exists a great politesse around women's poetry," Courtney Queeny writes, "and to write critically is, in some ways, to betray one's feminine self (the part that's supposed to blink a lot and sigh into the shadows when the menfolk start talking politics at the dinner table)."

In solidarity with Kamy Wicoff' and the SheWrites call to action, I've already bought Francine Prose's Gluttony and just bought Adina Hoffman's My Happiness bears No Relation to Happiness, which looks like a historic… Continue

Why Don't Fetuses Get Free Health Care?

It's a curious feature of the Republican approach to reproduction that the fetus has the right to life but not to medical care*. The life belongs to the fetus, so the money required to bring that fetus to term---including the cost of the birth---should be calculated not as part of the "expense" of being a woman in the health care system but rather as a Fetal Birthday Gift From America.

Women are more costly, the prevailing Republican wisdom goes, because of their child-bearing years. Pete Sessi… Continue

Why Women Don't Make Top Ten Lists: Prose on Prose

[crossposted]

Laura Miller's article on Publishers Weekly's top ten list led me to Francine Prose's article, "Scent of a Woman's Ink," which was published in Harper's Magazine in 1998. It's not available to nonsubscribers but it's a formidable piece and relevant still, though it's equally interesting to think about the ways in which some things have changed. I want to rescue it from the archives and reproduce some parts of it here for consideration as we pound our way through the… Continue

Oh good lord. LOL. I'm tempted to go find his blog, buy his book or whatever, read it when I need a laugh and use it all as inspiration to prove him completely wrong.

Hey LaTonya, I'm in. I'd be inclined to spend the year focusing on new books by women, since it seems like that's where we can make the most difference. Some possible additions to your list: Alice Munro's new book "Too Much Happiness" is coming out…

Hi Marcy, This is such a generous thread; thanks for starting it. My goblins are procrastination (the internet does not help---so easy to channel your energy anywhere that feels less risky) and fear of failure. They seem related. Fear of failure mi…

Hi Renate and Alice! Yeah, that Mailer quote is amazing in how directly it links noveling to 'nads. My co-blogger Carla Fran dug up some other nuggets of his some time ago that I'll reproduce shortly. Here's one: “The novel is like the Great Bitch…

Hi Cathy, Yup. That's struck me as a problem ever since I was a kid and noticed that while I read books with both girl and boy protagonists, boys would rather die than read the Ramona books or even "A Wrinkle in Time." The Harry Potter franchise wo…

Such a great article, Lizzie. "The publishing industry is no better at ignoring gender than your average obstetrician." I had this line pointed out to me a week or so ago by a fellow writer; loved it then, love it now. And yes: the risk of adopting…

Fabulous discovery, Millicent, of this poignant article by Francine Prose. I hope many, many She Writers will read it and think about her reflections on Norman Mailer: "If Norman Mailer didn't exist, we might have had to invent the man who could utt…
