Don't Should Me!

Enough already! On both my morning commute and my afternoon drive home, the radio DJ's were blasting out a litany of stats on failed resolutions! Already!?! Seriously!?! Isn't this still the first week in January? Yes, I turned them right off...but it got me thinking.  Who says you need to start that page-a-day writing regime on January 1st or it will never happen? Who says you need to start a kale-juice…See More

Creative Sparks

Recently, I rubbed shoulders with a ‘Brilliant One’… acclaimed as Brilliant with a capital B. I was quite in awe as we and felt the warmth radiating sparks from his star status. The whole millisecond was just that, a millisecond, but enough to feel exactly what is transmitted from contact with a capital B Brilliant One. Actually it was only a handshake and a few niceties, but you get the metaphor. Yet, despite the hoopla buzzing about, there was a discernible droop around his eyes, a downward…See More

This New Day

This morning I woke feeling a bit off kilter. After eight days of being in a very intensive and regimented program of scoring AP English Literature essays, I suddenly had six undefined hours ahead of me before I needed to be at the airport, and my morning felt oddly stiff, like donning a new pair of shoes. I attempted to lay in bed but dawn called me out and up and lead me to wander beside the Ohio River, which snakes along the backside of Louisville, Kentucky. For me, walking generally leads…See More

My Script Frenzy

Just in case you thought I had completely forgotten my blog and was off chasing the sunset in Maui, I am here to let you know, that I have only been slightly swept away by Script Frenzy! 100 pages in one month... and a screenplay is born! Mine is based on a novel I wrote, CRAZY STRING. The following is the opening scenes, all taking place in a flashback 20…See More

When Darkness Steals a Place at the Table

I must admit, lately I have been feeling a bit sorry for myself... I know, a blogger needs to uplift and transport her readers to a better place, and not, as this post seems to be headed, into a place of self-pity. But, quite frankly, I am rather out of sorts... My life has brought me to a place where I am questioning WHY ME? much of the time... You must know that place, where you look up from your dinner and see that the table is peopled with some pretty sour faces... Maybe even a few…See More

Keep the Glass Half-full

I am not a strict locavore, I mean, I don't mind the taste of Jamaica in my Rum or the Rhine in my Riesling, but increasingly I am drawn to praise the local distilleries and vineyards rising up around me, and for good reason. In fact, without leaving the small state of Vermont one can find plenty of unique elixirs to stock their liquor cupboard or wine cellar. I will feature only three in this post, but I am certain one might just as well highlight countless others, for as these family-owned…See More

The Dinner Party Revisited

Thinking about a dinner party? Overwhelmed? As far back as I can remember, my mother held several grand dinner parties a year. Sometimes they were family reunions, Irish Catholic style (code for large!) with sixty or more people milling around a table laden with copious platters of meats and cheeses and veggies. Other times her dinners were comprised of a select six couples. The dinning room table set with her silver flatware, bone china and crystal flutes placed just so. Candles lit by 6:30…See More

Lights in the Dark

December has faded and has taken with her the colored lights and shiny bows and gold sequins. Finding it hard to hold your head up, keep your mental and physical health and that much needed drive at work? Seriously, who likes January? As we box up our Santas, store the wrapping paper for another year, place all the ornaments in the attic, we need something to help us out of the doldrums, right? My suggestion: keep your outside lights lit! Before the holiday we spent loads of weekend time…See More

Tis the Season

Tis the Season for gift-giving, so naturally I have some advice ! Although I have no intention of contradicting last year's post The Art of Giving this year's suggestions are a bit different. You see, these gifts can't be bought in a store or wrapped in shiny…See More

The Finish Line

Finish-lines, dead-lines, due-dates, the red ribbon we cross through, there on the horizon. Our dream. Staring us in the face. What do we do with that image? How do we proceed? Do we rush toward it, ignoring all the distractions? Do we start strong and finish strong? Do we need or use or look for support along the way?I recently tested my own ability to cross the finish-line myself by writing 50,000 words in one month. A novel from start to finish. No notes, no outline, no preplanning. Just…See More

Hi Moira.  Thanks for friending me.  This is scarier than I thought it would be.  Small voices in my head say, "You're not really a writer.  Stop trying to fool everyone."  Making my first friend on the site is affirming.  I do belong. I do belong.  I do belong.  Thanks.
