I think of all the hours she spent, holding me as I trembled and tried to talk about what had happened to me. She smelled like Tide detergent and although she hadn't had her coffee yet, she held me close the way my mother could never manage, soft and strong and soothing and challenging all at once. She took in all the darkness and told me she loved me still.

My new years resolution 2012 was

Speak the Truth

(and the Truth will set you free)

and my bones ache with the need

to tell it all

to tell it clear and loud

but what if I speak

and no one hears

does it wither like a dream denied

what if I speak

truly, but truly

no one wants to know

is this truth too…

Dreaming of walking into the woods

Barefoot

Stumbling over roots and dirt and branches

Silent

Dark of night with stars and leaves and tiny spiders

Alone

Rough bark for touching but none for eating

Lost

in the forest

Falling

in the forest

Dark of night with nothing and no-one and never

waking up…

Day 17 - Flux by Orson Scott Card

Just finished this and my thoughts are: Excellent! Wish I'd known there was going to be a little author's note about each story. They were all grouped together at the end of the book but I'd have liked to read them directly after finishing each story. Also: what did I study in college? Literature? Why weren't we reading THIS? Sci-fi is not lit? I think it is. Also, it's the most open field for new authors, which most lit. majors wanted to be. Authors, that is, not necessarily sci-fi… Continue

Day 15 - I'll just add that to my resume, then...

I've taught English to two-year-olds in split bottom pants. The trick there is not letting them sit on your lap for storytime.I've taught English to bartenders and asked them to repeat after me. Bud...Wise...Er...I've taught businessmen and doctors, flight attendants and fry cooks.I've taught Little Emperors in large classes, I've taught university students and training school…See More

Day 16 - It's not easy being fourteen

I remember being fourteen. It's not an age I'd ever want to repeat. The only thing that might have made it worse though, might have been being 14 in China.Scott is fourteen this year, and I teach him English every Saturday morning for two hours. I like him a lot. He's a good student and although he still occasionally sits silently for a couple of minutes trying to work out how to say what he wants to say, his English is steadily…See More

Thanks, Nicki! I went back and fleshed it out with a few more lines here and there about the actual setting and about my background that brought me there to the men's prison. Your interst is encouraging and your question helpful.
I love your artwork and the beginings of what I have read of yours. Will be reading more! warm regards, kelly

Hi Nikki, Thanks for visiting my page :-) My question about chapter length (is it kosher to have a chapter of only four pages?) is somewhat premature. I was just adding to it. My husband is reading a novel that has 61 chapters, but the book about 550 pages (paperback). Some of those chapters are really short. I guess the answer is the chapter is done when it's done.
