A CANDID LOOK AT RACE AND CLASS

Biracial children face many challenges.  As a mom  with three biracial children I know how frustrating it is when people want my children to classify and identify with only one of their many heritages.  Seven million Americans consider themselves multiracial .  The growth rate of multiracial community in the United States is 3.4%, making it the fastest growing demographic.Below is a review of  The Girl Who Fell From the Sky.  The book chronicles a candid look at race and class. The Girl Who Fell…See More

Interview: Valerie Bowen, Author of Tormented

I have a great deal of respect for people who do not let negatives in their life define who they become.  I am hugely impressed with Valerie Bowen and her willingness to share her personal experiences in her writing. Her novel, For the Sake of Amelia Tormented, has been an eye-opener for many people.  Her book gives the reader hope; it shows that one can find hope even in the most dire circumstances.…See More

Why I wrote My Birthday Is September Eleven and Other Short Stories: An Amazon top 100 best-selling book

I am so happy My Birthday Is September, and Other Short Stories is on Amazon top 100-best selling list again.  The paperback copy stayed on the list for three weeks when it was first published in September. After having taught middle school for 17 years, I understand what teens go through emotionally.  Middle school students often engage in irrational behavior, not because they want to, because their brain is not fully developed yet. Teens at that age also have to deal with self-esteem issues.  …See More

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

In celebration of the holiday season, I have lowered the prices of my Ebooks to 99 cents.  As a classroom teacher of 26 six years, I understand the value of encouraging your kids to read.  According to research, a child who can’t read well by the time he or she reaches third grade is on a fast track to struggle with school. Have a wonderful holiday season everyone! You can purchase your Ebook copy here:…See More

THE INTERESTING LIFE OF A SEA TURTLE

When my sixteen-year-old son begged to return to Cancun for a family vacation, I was not too thrilled.  Cancun was the last place I wanted to go.  We had already been to the same resort twice before.  Finally, my son mentioned practicing his Spanish and doing an extra credit report for his level three Spanish class for the 2011-201 school year.  Well, that idea sold me and my husband immediately booked our vacation to Cancun. Off to Cancun we went.  The first night at the resort turned out to…See More

RACISM: MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

I do not like spending too much time wallowing in things I have zero control over. Today I found myself knee deep in thoughts about a topic that sends chills up and down my spine. It is not my favorite topic, but after reading Carolyn Meyer’s book White Lilacs and an article about Darrel Brown, I felt compelled to write about my least favorite topic: Racism.Reading Meyer’s book and the article about Darrel Brown forced me to think about my own experiences with racism. I tried my best to…See More
