Cyberspace is quite something.  I have Slovene friends who have been visiting my cinema blog religiously for the last six months.  I decided to check out this country called Slovenia.  I remember it briefly from my Geography class.  The people are called Slovenes.  Their country is 20,273 square kilometres.  KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa where i grew up, is 94,361 square kilometres.  Slovenia seems to have mountains in abundance, but they can never be as breathtaking as the…See More

Padmavani Kareka – Part 3

Posted on April 3, 2011 at 9:30pm 3 Comments

I have raised the issue of how poetry is taught in schools in several blogs in the past.  I hated poetry because English teachers had a prescribed text of what poetry is all about.  It was never my view of the world.

Therefore, poetry ended up being something that happened in the United Kingdom and had meaning only for the middle class.  I follow Padmavani Kareka’s poetry because it talks to and is about me.  I’m free to interpret it the way I like.  She is not a teacher,…

New York Writers Coalition

The New York Writers Coalition is one of the writers' homes supported by SW.  That is where i saw their logo made from pencils.  Very interesting.  I think it's a reminder of pre-laptop computer and pre-i-Pad tools.  I found these pencils and sharpener in my study, looking very depressed because nobody has sharpened them for years.  Oops!

Nonqaba, I just opened the door to the novelist group for you - welcome! You might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion if you're not too uncomfortable talking about what you're working on. And we do a live chat every Wednesday; hope you can join us for that!

Sorry Nonqaba, in all the excitement I forgot to answer your questions :) No I am not a part of any poetry group and I never did think that my poems could be inflicted on others :) though I secretly hoped that when I did do that, people would enjoy reading them.:)

Dear Nonqaba

Thank you, thank you for this beautiful compliment. I had the beginnings of a tear. I don't mean to be dramatic, but that's a fact. I was surprised at myself. I have been very shy of making my poetry blog public and then realised I had to. And to hear such gracious words from you is such an encouragement and an honour.

I am waiting eagerly for your criticism on the rest.

Cheers

P.S. You remind me of Dr. Maya Angelou :)

Hi: Hope you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving. My first name was given to me over 40 years ago by a friend from East Africa. Later, I remarried and my new husband and I, both African American TM teachers, adopted our last name, altered the spelling a bit, and went to court to have it legalized. So that's the short story behind my name. We also gave our children African names. The very first magazine article I wrote and got published was about our name change, our sixth month stay in Africa and our struggle to define our identity for ourselves. Your name looks interesting as well. What's the story behind it?
