In 2006 I was invisible -- an infertile, childless woman unseen and marginalized. That's because society was in the early days of a love affair with all things mommy. Moms Clubs celebrated their "mommy movement." No child, no…

Who is Your Michelango?

A recent story in the New York Times under the header "Sustainable Love" prompted me to think about how we develop and change as individuals, and gave me insights into how to further shape the mosaic that is now moi. The main point of the story is that the…See More

Black Sheep Publishing Victory

It was mid-afternoon in the Sierra Nevada Mountains when the email arrived.

Three loads of laundry had been folded and tucked back into their rightful place. The kitchen floor glistened, still fresh from a serious mopping with Murphy's Oil Soap. Digital images stored in my computer held joy and wonder from a long holiday weekend of Fourth of July fireworks, mini golf and lake fun. The junior croquet set was stored in the garage. The marshmallows, carefully toasted over the Weber… Continue

Getting It Together Old School

Elizabeth Gilbert I am not.

Envy about her being one of the top five authors in Amazon.com's "memoir" category aside, there are other reasons to dwell on her this morning just as the sun is about to rise.

Let's start there. The sun is about to rise and I'm *not* consumed with angst.

Breakfast with angst, for far too long, was part of my regular routine ... and I'm guessing for most of the women who have walked in my shoes ... just as crying in the shower and… Continue

Julie & Julia & Me

Posted on September 21, 2009 at 7:30am 0 Comments

I'm way late (no, not that late -- that's something I have never actually experienced).

I'm talking late in writing a review on Julie & Julia. Who waits six weeks after a film comes out to weigh in?

Me, that's who.Think of it as an opinion that's been, well, marinating. There are so many similarities between the movie and my life I feel as though I was in it. Never has the an old saying that life imitates art been more true.

Where to begin? The… Continue

Thanks, Pamela. Your note about Divine Caroline and More.com was helpful, indeed. It's a challenge vetting all the various blog directories and such out there, so I always seek insider feedback.

Hi Pamela,
I read your blog post at Divine Caroline on non-moms with awe. I, too, am a non-mom. I always thought and planned to have children, but, alas, it never happened. My husband and I, however, elected not to go to extreme measures, as we called it to do so. I am aghast there are people out there who are so rude as to make comments like you have received. I am sorry you have to deal with that.

I poked around on Divine Caroline for a bit. It looks like an interesting site, and I was wondering if you could tell me more about it--its basic focus, its readership, etc.

Mahalo,
Kim

Your book looks interesting. I had many roll models of woman who had fulfilling lives without having children, from a favorite Aunt to creative and political women to just plain friends.

Hi Pamela,
Thanks for contacting me about my book. Yes, Nan Robertson is a superstar in the world of women and media. I have met her many times and used her book in research. Very interested in your book; I went through it, too, years ago...

Hey Pamela! I loved the intro to your book that you posted for the Health Writers group. Is the book in publication yet?

I am working on a somewhat-related memoir/pop science/nonfiction project right now and would really love to talk to you about your work and experiences writing about infertility. Shoot me an email at sbc323@gmail.com if you'd be willing to chat!

Hey Pamela, saw your comment on the bloggers group, and I've ordered your book. My book about later motherhood involved interviewing quite a few women who became moms after some struggle with infertiilty, at various ages. And their stories are only one aspect of the experience. Writing that book led me to realize how complicated the dynamics of women's fertility and women's work in the modern world are -- so my new project is to try to explore that -- or at least some aspects of it. And to listen to women's stories. Sorry you don't feel supported by feminists -- I think there's far to go to allow women to feel supported in many realms, but we're moving toward it.
cheers,
Elizabeth
