Playing through the Painful Days

Posted on June 30, 2011 at 8:16pm 0 Comments

Sometimes when the day is getting away from you, you just have to play.

This particular day started out with me waking up extremely sleep-deprived from extended nursing sessions the night before, and rushing out of the house to drop my husband at work (we have one car so coordinating schedules is tricky), only to arrive at his work, pausing in his office to feed our daughter her breakfast, and realizing, we forgot the diaper bag.  Anticipating her morning BM, we grabbed the…

The Importance of Speaking Honestly to Children

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 6:14am 0 Comments

My daughter, V, like any curious toddler, asks a lot of questions.  Some of which, I’m not quite sure how to answer. But I’d rather admit that I, the great and powerful mother, am not all-knowing, than lie to my child. After reading the book, Nurture Shock, which includes a discussion on lying in young children and teens, I was shocked to learn how frequently both children and adults lie.  It truly…

Hi all,

I am writing an unusual blog…for me, today.  First of all, I’m posting on a Tuesday.  Second of all, this will be more of a  query than my usual style.  But I think this topic is relevant for all…

Mommy Mishaps: days you had as a mother (or father) that you never thought you’d laugh about

I’m a pretty serious gal.  I am bookish and introverted, and sometimes socially awkward.  I’m not a quick wit kind of person, which is why I love to write because with time to reflect and think, I can communicate my more authentic self.  But sometimes life…

The Ripple Effect 2009--My Blog

Blogging Goodbyes

This post may come as a shock to a few committed readers, but I have reached a decision that I am convinced will be freeing for my life:  I am shutting down my blog. There have been signs for a while now:  my lack of interest, the urge to be doing rather than editorializing, the […]

“Follow the Yellow Trail”

My gal V recently watched parts of the Wizard of Oz with her grandfather, Poppi (don’t worry…not the scary parts).  As a result, she’s been taking her Wizard of Oz figurines, bequeathed by my mother, and making them dance and sing “Follow the Yellow Trail!” We like exploring trails in our family. This July, we […]

Going to the Zoo Through Play and Books

My little gal V has a stuffed animal collection that I’ve worked to limit since she joined our family a little over two years ago.  I have put out the word to curtail gift giving of fluffy friends since year one.  Still, in addition to the 10 or so that accompany her to bed every […]

Summer Days and Autumn Nights: Good Reads for Any Season

Nonfiction: Last Child in the Woods  by Richard Louv:  I recommend all educators and parents of young children read this and support the Children and Nature Network online.  This title has been out for a while, but as the parent of a young child, it touched me in a way that I previously would not […]

Learning and Loving to Read

One of the great gifts my mother gave me is a voracious love of reading.  She read aloud to me from an early age, took me to libraries and book sales, and always made sure I had plenty of reading material available to me.  As adults, she and I swap books and recommendations; whenever I […]

Writing: The Enemy of Mindfulness?

I meditate, but only for 10-minute stints, and I don't do it every day.  I’m a very sporadic and inconsistent yogi. I've never been to an ashram and probably never will.  Yet, I claim to live a (sorta) mindful life.   I can sit in traffic or get…See More
