Finding the Time For Quiet.

Make an appointment with yourself for 15 minutes of "quiet time" each day and show up for the appointment. Stilling the mind for a short period is a fantastic mental health break. As daily exercise is good for the body, this reflection time provides health benefits, both physically and mentally. Reflecting in the morning while the coffee is brewing, gets the day off to a grounded start. Reflecting before bedtime aids sleep. Sharing a reflection time with a loved one strengthens the…See More

It Starts

The sirens sang out to the quiet night moon. The Depot was ablaze. The firefighters aroused from sleep and now running on adrenaline laid out the hoses and spanner wrenched the hydrants. At least there were no apartments in the building. When the building across the street went up, the squeals of college students trying to bundle up tee shirts and jeans pierced the night. This one was bad. Too much orange glow.Morning light exposed the dripping body. The next shift of volunteers busied…See More

October

Autumn is a season of transformation. Nature, birthed in the giddy colors of Spring, shows her maturity. Fields of grain that once whipped to and fro in summer’s stiff breezes now bob slowly, their heads heavy with ripened fruit. Shades of green turn to russet and gold, later to carpet the ground with a mosaic of muted color. If one did not know the cycle, one would only see aging and death.

Meditation is a period of transformation. One steps out of the cycle of daily activity. The… Continue

Doctors hate to lose and families don’t want to let go. The result is extraordinary measures are taken to extend life when it is obvious that a person’s body is failing and their mind has already gone.

We are meeting everyone’s needs but the one who is dying. We hook them up to machines to let them breathe. We stick a tube into their stomach to provide nourishment. We surround them with monitors that blink and beep constantly. To keep them “comfortable” in the midst of this… Continue
