The odds.....

I was just thinking about how the things and situations and people we quickly write off as being dysfunctional can actually be nurturing in their very own way.One of the recent reviews of my memoir said something like "Against all the odds she went on to become a writer". But I think it is because of "all the odds" that I achieved my ambition of becoming a writer.I was raised by an elderly,…See More

A Cautionary Tale: Google is your friend; Facebook, not so much.....

ABOUT A YEAR ago, I was putting the finishes touches to my memoir, beginning work on my second book, and generally doing what I do....Out of the blue I received a friend request from a stranger on Facebook. Nothing especially strange about that. This would-be Facebook friend had written an autobiography and was about to self-publish it. Bio:

Precious Williams was first published aged 8 when her poem won first prize in a poetry competition, netting her £2.

Born in the UK, she is of Sierra Leonean and Nigerian extraction. When Precious was a few days old her Nigerian mother advertised her in the classified ads section of a magazine called "Nursery World." The ad is said to have read: "Pretty Nigerian baby girl needs a new home."

The advertisement was answered by a kind but eccentric 57-year-old white woman who said she'd loved "coloured" people ever since first reading Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin."

Precious's first book, "Precious: A True Story" is a memoir about her turbulent childhood and teenage years. The book is titled "Color Blind" in the US. Both editions will be published by Bloomsbury in August 2010.

Precious is also a journalist and has been a Contributing Editor at Elle, the Mail on Sunday and Cosmopolitan and a Feature Writer at the Independent. She has also been published in Marie Claire, The Times, the Financial Times, New York Magazine, Glamour and several other publications.
