I'm so glad to hear that you moved on from that publisher, Rachel. If it's not a memoir, it's not a memoir, right? Alle

Alle, I don't have a contract with the publisher. This was all talked about before a contract was involved but I have decided to not deal with this publisher and I am just going to go the new media route and make it into a serial novel then…

That is a hard thing to answer, but I may have an idea. I have been trying to write about this situation that I was in, but well, long story short, I changed the name and wrote it in 3rd person as a way of distancing myself. I would fight to keep it…

Stacy, I personally wanted the book to be marketed as fiction. No, I have not signed a contract with the publisher but I wanted to get an opinion from other people before or if I do go with this publisher. Even if I don't work with this…

That's not true! Nonfiction doesn't get more respect than fiction! Please! I think the pub is really trying to say, they want you to change it because it will be easier for them to sell it, point blank. But no, if anything, fiction gets…

Hi, Rachel. I just stumbled across your post about "creative nonfiction vs. fiction," and i am concerned on a number of fronts.

A story ether is fiction or is nonfiction. The "creative" part of creative nonfiction has to do with how you tell the story, not whether or not the story is real. In CNF, hanging over every word is the understanding that the author is telling her truth, not spinning a tale.

Fiction writers are trying to tell a good story.. Whether or not any element of the book "actually happened: does not matter. Hanging over every word is the possibility that the writer can or has changed the truth to fit their story.

For the record, there is no such thing as a CNF novel (unless you count "True Blood" which published as the first nonfiction novel.) Maybe your publisher wants you to turn your novel into a memoir? Be wary. Writers have gotten into lots of trouble for that.

From what you describe, your publisher doesn't know what he is talking about. I think you need another set of eyes on your contract. I suggest looking into your local writers' union.

Be well

Alle

You are correct the Judge is no longer employed as a judge. Thank goodness!

Keep livin' in love and little by little people will just see your marriage for what it is....LOVE! Amy

Hey Rachel. Finding the time to write is the hardest part for me too. I try to put my daughter (2 1/2 years old) in daycare two or three days a week, 12 to 18 hours total each week. It's not the best solution but it's the only one for me right now, and even that isn't enough time, especially with all the prep work/copy edits, etc, I am doing on my collection of short stories for the Feb publication date. It's actually what made me go back to writing short stories, suddenly having only short periods of time. But now my novel, under contract with Penguin, needs work, and I am finding it really hard to go back to such a large canvas. Not sure what I will do as the date for the first draft draws nearer (November 1!!!)...

A (belated) welcome to the Nanowrimo-group, Rachel. I was off sick and just got back to the computer today.
The group is pretty dormant unless Nanowrimo rolls around. Most are busy reworking or finishing the book written during the last Nanowrimo – or dreaming up the next one. :)
You can find a lot of tips if you browse the discussions in the groups. If there is anything you'd like help with or you want to share: just shout out in the group or start a discussion.
