So apparently you have to be a male writer to make any money, right?

My Writing Inspiration? Riffing on Men

Posted on December 22, 2010 at 2:25pm 1 Comment

On my blog http://RachelintheOC.com I've written about twenty blog posts with the Mancode tag which are without question my most popular. What is my inspiration?

Well, I've been married for over eighteen years to a good guy. But come on, he's a guy. He can't find the butter in the frig when it's right in front of him. He can change executive's minds but not a roll of toilet paper. And while he loves me, he can't understand why on earth I need…

Winona Ryder as Spock's Mom: Are Young Women Cast as Matriarchs the New Trend?

Posted on January 17, 2010 at 3:09pm 0 Comments

I quite enjoyed the most recent Star Trek movie. I’m married to a total sci-fi geek (and a fan of the original series myself) and we saw it in IMAX once, a regular old boring movie theater once, and now on our own TV at least three times. Each time, I catch a few more neat little references J.J. Abrams has thrown in there and I think wow, great flick, clever guy. But something has been bothering me ever since that first viewing — the casting of Winona Ryder as Spock’s (played with… Continue

We've come a long way, baby?

So yesterday was Colonial Day for my daughter's fifth grade class. It was just pure joy and exhilaration....not. It was pure fucking hell.

See, there's this little thing called women's lib? Feminism? However, apparently private schools in southern Orange County haven't heard of these concepts. They think that doing stuff the old-fashioned way is "fun." What kind of stuff, you ask? Oh, making corn husk dolls, cookies, soap, candles, quill on parchment, sewing quilts, stencil… Continue

1800dentist and me: a call to action!

Posted on January 6, 2010 at 4:00pm 0 Comments

So this morning I was annoyed (yet again) by those annoying 1800dentist commercials. Not because the commercials themselves are annoying (which they are); no, it's because they portray the lone female as a complete and utter idiot. If she were a man, she would not be made to look as vapidly stupid as she does in those ridiculously moronic commercials. I personally find them offensive to be quite honest.

Then, an IKEA commercial came on. I don't know about you, but I don't run around… Continue

Dear Rachel,
I am very sorry to hear about the tragic loss of this important person in your life... It sounds not too surprising that it opened a floodgate to your writing. For someone to "critique" one's writing it has to either be a good writer friend whom you totally trust to be supportive and clever, or a coach whom you trust. There are numerous people at SheWrites who offer coaching, some may also offer group critique for free, but I don't know who they are. It may be worth a try. I am a coach, as you know, and would be glad to discuss with you how doing a piece of work together might work... It that interests you you are welcome to write to my e-mail: renate@renatestendhal.com and then we' ll talk about it and see where we can go from there.
Warm regards, Renate

Hi Rachel,
Angels Carry the Sun is coming out in June with Lilly Press. My website, www.phoebewilcox.com, has links to the first chapter, which was published in Wild River Review a couple years back, if you want to read it. I am a very lyrical writer myself, actually, I think because I started out writiing poetry so really I am a poet who just decided to tell a bigger story! Funny that you mention John Irving b/c I love him too--what I've managed to read. I just had to return Widow for One Year to the library before I'd managed to finish it! Some rat put a hold on the darn thing so I couldn't renew it! John Irving was actually one of my dad's teachers at the Iowa Writers' Workshop years ago. My Dad said he was really nice. ----My writing process--well, sometimes something (usually some little metaphorical thing) just flashes into my brain and it may make no sense at all but I'll try and work it into a storyline somehow. I'm working on my next two novels right now and that's how those are proceeding anyway. Angels was different because it was my first and I was new to it--and because I was basing some of it on real life/family experience--it was a very difficult write...some of it grew out of actual journal entries, I think.
