The Comfort of Bad Reviews (That Aren't Yours)

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. For every moment of awe a writer has at seeing her book on a shelf, at being told by readers what comfort they found in your words, come the times when you read the word “blech” in a reader’s review. It’s part of the business and there’s no answer except M&M’s, but…See More

Miep Gies remembered: How Books Challenge Us

“I am not a hero. I stand at the end of the long, long line of good Dutch people who did what I did or more—much more—during those dark and terrible times years ago, but always like yesterday in the hearts of those of us who bear witness. Never a day goes by that I do not think of what happened then. More than twenty thousand Dutch people helped to hide Jews and others in need of hiding during those years. I willingly did what I could to help. My husband did as well. It was not enough.” (from…See More

Fiction from Emotional Fact

A parent’s tragedy will always influence the life of their children—often to an overwhelming degree. Writing fiction from the emotional truth of one’s past can be liberating and also confusing. How do writers use their past without being wedded to events as they happened? How do we write honestly, without spilling family…See More

Launching A Book Without Looking Friends, Family, or Your Mind

Unmitigated panic. Unrelenting fear. Ulcer-inducing worry.A year ago my book was launching and I should have been on cloud nine. I was realizing a life-long dream at a time when many my age popped Lipitor. I was edging close to a sedative habit.Looking back to my novel debut last January, terror defined my anticipatory state-of-being. How would I bear bad reviews? (Weeping. Definitely weeping.) What if I got no reviews? (More weeping) What if no one came to my book launch party? What if there…See More

The Trauma of Truth-Telling

I tried to write this post three or four times, but each time I sort of drifted away... online shopping, anyone?A few months ago I had a minor bout of depression that depressed the hell out of me. Truly, I had no reason for the melancholy that overcame me. Daily I ran through my checklist: Family healthy? Check. Children doing…See More

Hi there--just wanted to drop by your page and invite you personally to our first-ever She Writes Boston meetup, celebrating She Writes' one-year anniversary! The Boston gathering will be hosted by none other than Jaclyn Friedman, author of "Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and a World Without Rape (and one of Publishers' Weekly's Top 100 Books of 2009)," and visionary leader of Women, Action Media (WAM!). At the meetup writers will take part in the She Writes "Book Communion," where attendees arrive with one book, their own or another She Writers', new or gently used, and leave with another book as a meaningfully way to support one another's work. We will also be blowing out a candle and making a wish for our upcoming writing year -- along with She Writers gathering in 16 cities around the country. I hope you will be part of this historic (well, at least kind of cool) occasion, and RSVP now to Jaclyn here.

Ah, why would you put it together!? How lovely that you are part Dutch--where do you live? (Why am I thinking Aruba?) And when is your book coming out?

Randy,

Congratulations on hitting the Dutch bestseller list!

It's funny, I'm part Dutch and had indeed recently heard of Vleugellam (I don't remember where or when, but I did), just as I had heard of The Murderer's Daughters (through your page here). But somehow I had not put 2 and 2 together - it's been a crazy chaotic month for me, so please forgive.

Anyway, it seems to me that your is definitely creating buzz...
Awesome!
Savor it!
