In my twenty-fifth year of teaching, I was called into the principal’s office. Believe me, students are not the only ones who are apprehensive to cross that threshold… I didn’t have a clue what he…Continue

Farewell to the Best Dog in the World

On Wednesday, May 16, the garbage truck driver ran over my dog, Jack. He didn't even slow down. Thankfully, I didn't see it happen because I wasn't home, but the men who work in the cemetery witnessed it and buried him for me. You see, they loved Jack, too. He managed to show up in the cemetery everyday when they were having lunch. You can guess the rest! Jack never turned down a scrap of food, a fact I attributed to him being a rescue dog who was underfed when he came to live with us. We…See More

Hello Rebeccah. Thank you for the friend request. I am excited about your new book on Amazon and you'll have to keep us updated. I am at the library now, researching for a second novel. My first is in the hands of a friend, who will review it and make notes. The fact that I'm even at this place in my life makes me pose the question, "am I nuts?" Happy writing.

Hi Rebeccah, I just sent you a friend request (thought I had done that, but I guess I didn't)! I'm still interested in doing a new author interview with you on my blog, http://literarylegs.blogspot.com.  Would love to hear from you! Do you have an email address I can sent the interview question to?

Hi Rebecca,

I am unable to send you a personal message, so I'm writing right here in the comments section. I would LOVE to hear about your novel and about your work with Writer's Digest! I occasionally share writing contests with my readers at my blog Literary Legs (http://literarylegs.blogspot.com) so I think my readers will be thrilled to hear your story. I've gotten a lot of response from people interested in sharing their publishing stories, so I've decided to try and do two author interview per month. We can pencil you in around March 30th. If that works for you, let me know. Shoot me an e.mail at laurapage_@hotmail.com and we can further discuss details.

Best,

Laura

The Appalachian Custom of Grave Tending

Posted on April 8, 2012 at 9:41pm 0 Comments

My mother and I spent yesterday afternoon tending the graves of my father and sister. Decorating family graves is as much an Appalachian tradition as eating soup beans with cornbread. Grave tending is a seasonal activity and it is especially important in the spring. When the winter…

Remembering

Posted on March 4, 2012 at 2:16pm 0 Comments

I will remember February 2012 as the month I lost two people who were precious to me. My Aunt Hettie, ninety-one, slipped away, and two days later, Mike Mullins, only sixty-three, died of a heart attack. One death was expected; one was a kick in the teeth.

Aunt Hettie was the oldest of fourteen children and a sister of my eighty-eight-year-old mother. If you lined the siblings up by age, my mother is number three and the last one living of the first six, a…

Shoes

Posted on January 22, 2012 at 3:05pm 0 Comments

Okay, ladies. It's time to fess up. Do you love shoes? Really love shoes? Or are you more of a purse person? Recently, I saw a woman holding six shoe boxes standing in line at an upscale department store. Her companion had three purses. Both ladies were thrilled with their finds. I admit that I too had perused the shoes!

How many pairs of shoes do you have? Do you keep them in the boxes? Do you still have the shoes you wore with your wedding dress or wore for a special…

I witnessed the sun rise over Harlem. Harlem NYC.How different it is to wake up here than in Raleigh. No birds singing. No birds in sight. No grass, few trees. No greenery to be seen. But I have found a LOVE for it. I walked down Lenox Avenue, 125th…See More
