The Backspace Writers Conference Experience ~ Smells Like Success Waiting to Happen

Posted on June 9, 2012 at 2:30pm 2 Comments

I recently attended the Backspace Writers Conference in New York City, from 24-26 May 2012, and I'd recommend it to anyone who can find the time and money to invest in it.  I believe this is true for those who are looking to self-publish or go the traditional route.

This was my first conference, and I met a lot of other first-timers, too, including one my fellow…

Eye on the Prize ~ Keep Reading, Writing and Reaching!

It's a sad reality that sometimes, the people from whom you expect to get the most support and encouragement will be the ones who will be the wet blankets at your picnic.  If not that, then choose the cliche most to your liking.  Wet blanket at your picnic, rain on your parade, or just plain naysayers to everything and anything at which you put forth some effort.  Maybe they don't even realize they're bringing you down, and maybe they do.

And unfortunately, that includes family,…

Weird, Creepy, Socially Inept...Writers and Others

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 4:30pm 1 Comment

I guess I just don't understand the creepy weirdness of some people.  Some creepy weirdness, I get.  I am, after all, an artist.

I tell myself that perhaps a few generations ago, it might have been the "in" thing to be a complete social recluse of a writer.  It made the authors mysterious, and by extension, some kind of cool.  I suppose.

In the days of writers and artists like Poe, Fitzgerald, Hemingway,…

Take Your Writing Seriously, So That Others Will, Too

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 4:00pm 24 Comments

Here is your main take-away from this post:

Serious writers should strive NOT to be junk peddlers.  Self-published/Indie authors have the worst reputations for being junk peddlers.

If you're going to make a business of your writing, it's very important that you do your part to change that perception.  Do your best to make your writing worth someone's time and…

Hi, Regina!

Let's schedule a time to talk. I checked your website, and I must say it is a huge but rewarding undertaking. I wish you all the luck! If I can be of any help, please let me know. Also, you may want to check out The Story Plant. They are doing some good work. If you want, I can put you in touch with one of the co-founders -- just to compare notes, maybe?

Doing some clean-up today.  Did you ever write a review of my book?  If so, where?  And if not, I'd appreciate a line or two on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Husbands-May-Come-Friends-Forever/product-reviews/0982504608/ref=sr_1_1_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

Hey Ry,

I haven't been on SheWrites much lately.  Been busy doing my own "thang" I suppose.  I'm curious as to what my SheWrites friends are up to, writing-wise, though.  Right now, I'm waiting to hear back from 2 agents who have requested my full manuscript of The Time Minders.  I'm still working on Kingdoms of Blood & Magic, but not as diligently as I should, since I've been querying/submitting for the TTM, doing scads of tutoring at my daughters' school and work for our church's youth group.  How about YOU?

Hello there!  I hope my message finds you well.  I reviewed your profile and wanted to thank you for your service to our country.  Also, a very big congrats on establishing your publishing house!  Impressive.

I was wondering if you or someone you knew might be interested in collaborating on a choreopoem as a playwright or choreographer.  The premise focuses on the Black experience in America.  As a heads-up, I am based out of Atlanta.  Let me know… Take care.

" My past is where my writing gets its energy..."

I think that's true for me too. Sometimes I like to play the "What if" game with myself, "What if I hadn't moved in with that boyfriend when I was 18," "What if I had gone straight to college instead of going straight into the work world," "What if I hadn't gone to college," What if I had never had my kids," "Would life be much simpler?" "Would I still be the person I am today?"

I have made mistakes, like everyone else, I have regrets for those mistakes, but I wouldn't change a thing about how my life has transpired up until now. It's made me who I am today, and I like me. :o) I love my kids, I have a good job, good family and friends. I wouldn't change the good or the bad about my past because my life experiences have changed me in positive ways. I have a stronger faith, I am more compassionate, less judgmental, and wiser, and humble enough to say I'm still learning. Also, I discovered how much I love to write, and am more creative than ever. I feel my past has shaped that.

So I'm with you, I hope I'm never so 'well adjusted' that I can't look back. :o)

Thanks Regina. I'm a seriously green beginner here. Any tips, or links to guide for beginning writers are welcome. I must say, I'm not a beginner writer, but a beginner non-technical/non-audit related writer. :o)

Thanks Regina!  And also for the comment.  I'll post about the conference on the thread I started.  I thought I did already, but I'm losing track of where I write what!  Does that happen to you?  I like your site by the way!
