Stories are like sharks - to stay alive they must keep moving

A simple trick for writing a compelling story  One day I want to write a story that runs backwards. I’ll start with the protagonists in a mire of disaster, and then tick back through time, unpicking their mistakes, until they are blithe and bonny.Read more...…See More

Using an editor? Two questions so you don't shoot the messenger

Two major reasons why authors might get angry after a critique report from an independent editorI thoroughly enjoy the final stages of writing a critique for an author client. I’ve digested their novel, I know what’s ticking nicely and what isn’t. It’s even more exciting when I know they have the skill, the insight, the ear for language and the sensitivity for story and character. That if they solve the remaining problems, their novel will really set sail. But often I know I’m going to get an…See More

Alan Titchmarsh is the Prime Minister of Canada – using pictures to bring characters alive

It’s often a struggle to bring a character alive the first time they appear in a book. Here’s one of the things I doI once made Alan Titchmarsh the Prime Minister of Canada.I hope he’d be amused to know that, and let me make it clear that it was only in the privacy of my study and the pages I was writing.Read more...…See More

Would you cross the road to avoid them? A major problem with flawed characters

Characters with major flaws aren’t always endearing. Here’s how they might scare the reader awayMost writers are aware that if their main character is going to change, they have to set them up as incomplete, or flawed, or in need of something. But I see a lot of manuscripts where they’ve gone too far. The MC is so abject, feeble, whiney, wussy, miserable, dysfunctional or even bonkers it’s a wonder they ever acquired a bipedal stance. Read more...…See More

Why the best novels are written on the back of an envelope

Writers, are you daunted by a  blank sheet of paper? Here’s a remedyDo you have special notebooks? I have several. Many of them were gifts from friends who wanted to give me something writerly ‘to help with my new book’. The most extraordinary is upholstered in buckskin and inhabited by rough-edged Japanese paper with glints of gold,…See More

From tiny beginnings: how I start a novel

Can you remember what you did when you started on the novel you’re working on? If you’ve finished more than one, do you have a way you like to prepare? Have faith – there is a book at the end of the tunnel

Two weeks ago I dotted the last pixel on my MG/YA novel Life Form 3 and now it’s got an agent who loves it. Phew.A few months ago no one would have loved this book. Not even me. Although occasionally scenes and characters would flash a winning smile, there was so much that remained wrong with it. And I’d already been working on it for much of the year.  Read more... …See More
