SANDY ACKERS

ABOUT ME

I'm a professional writer, a Kaizen-Muse Creativity Coach and a lifelong creative adventurer. My explorations include forays into visual journaling, jewelry making, singing in the car, paper art, absurdist fiction, and coloring my life with a variety of creative pursuits.

As a writer, I've crafted everything from screenplay synopses and movie summaries to book jacket copy, web content and legal abstracts. I have published short fiction and poetry, and am currently writing a book on creativity.

I work with individuals and groups to help them unleash their creativity. This includes dealing with personal creative issues and/or getting over blocks, a general program to make creativity a regular part of life, a more specific focus on a particular project, or whatever else is needed. For more information, see my website.

I blog about creativity and writing at Strangling My Muse: Struggling to Live a Creative Life in a Stressful World.

Don't Let Perfectionism Strangle Your Muse

I've written several posts about perfectionism on my blog lately, and have been getting so much feedback from writers struggling with the issue, I thought they might be helpful to some of my fellow She Writes members.

Here's a quote from today's post: "An editor once told me my submission to his literary journal was the silliest story he’d ever read. Ouch! My own Inner Perfectionist couldn’t have dismissed my efforts with more derision. But I didn’t let his comments stop me. Okay, I… Continue

Your blog is creative and user friendly, but not only user friendly, it's user helpful! I'm in process of putting mine together now and it's far too much throwing out at the reader and not enough engagement. At least what I have in mind so far. I'm working with a friend to get a template and once I get it set up hope to figure out what else I can do to make it work best. I hope to get back to your site soon to explore, so I bookmarked it.
Thanks, Julene

While I agree that we can get carried away and even use prompts and exercises as effective avoidance techniques to tell ourselves, well, we ARE writing something, I found two books and a couple of classes to be enormously helpful in getting me going…
