Blogging under a nom de plume - privacy vs. identity

I have built a reputation in certain circles under my own name but when it comes to blogging I don't feel that it gives my family sufficient privacy if I use my full real name (even if they are not identified by name). But if I blog under a different name then I still need to tell people who follow me under my real name about my blog. . .and then does that defeat the purpose?
