Call for interviewees: women who choose to be childfree

Since I'm 5 weeks off a strict manuscript delivery deadline, I definitely shouldn't be thinking about other book projects. But a plaintive Google search on 'I don't want kids' led some anonymous woman to my website, and it's spurred me on to thinking more about something I've been wanting to do for ages. I'm hoping that there will be people out there who want to help... more details here: http://www.sarahirving.co.uk/?p=413

Creative co-operation

After a few technical blips, Creative Co-operatives, a website I was commissioned to copywrite by Co-operatives UK, the main body representing the co-op sector in the UK, has gone live. The site includes case studies and information on why co-operating, collaborating and co-working can work for writers, journalists and other professionals in the 'creative industries' – acting, graphic design, fine art, textiles, web design, dance,… Continue

Reflections on a 'writing holiday'

Posted on April 30, 2010 at 8:30am 1 Comment

I've never been wholly convinced by the idea of writing classes. On my way to being a professional freelance writer, the most useful lessons I've learnt haven't been in classrooms or on webinars, but those taught by the experience of having my stories chucked back at me (metaphorically speaking, usually, in this world of emails and distance working), covered in red ink.

Of the few times I've been in an environment when I have, in theory, been 'taught' writing skills, I've come away either… Continue

AL Kennedy on The Writing Life

Posted on February 18, 2010 at 8:52am 0 Comments

Multi-award-winning novelist A L Kennedy just finished the last of three marvellously funny monologues on The Writing Life, broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Full of observations on subject ranging from a booktour disturbed by giant woodlice to some very creepy fans, the first two broadcasts are available to listen to for the next few days here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qplcy and… Continue

Hi Sarah, just read your post from December on tourism in conflict areas - fascinating!  I did my undergraduate dissertation on dark tourism, using the former World Trade Center in New York as my case study and found the whole issue very interesting.  Thanks for sharing the link in the Travel Writers forum.

Hi Sarah,
Your work with Pluto Press sounds right up my alley, and I've begun fishing around for my next project. I've been thinking about something on the IWW, probably Bill Haywood or Mother Jones. It would be interesting to talk. My website is www.capturetheflagbook.com.

Sarah - Congrats on the gig with Pluto Press. I'm still working hard to finish my multi-character monstrosity, but thought I'd shoot you a note to ask if you had authors lined up for any of the following:

* Bayard Rustin
* Philip Berrigan
* Daniel Ellsberg

I could keep going,but I'll stop here -- at least with deadline looming. Talk to you soon?
