Selene MacLeod replied to the discussion 'Where to Begin...' in the group Your First Novel
"Just some general thoughts.... I'm not sure what people are asking for when they say "I'm about to start a novel, got any advice?" Not that I'm any great sage, but I have to ask.... What are you looking for, exactly? There…"

Selene MacLeod replied to the discussion 'Where to Begin...' in the group Your First Novel
"Hi, Katherine. Congrats on taking the first step! I'm sure you know what you're doing, but the easiest way...Start at the beginning. I know that sounds too easy, but it's really the best way. Start at the beginning of the story and…"

Selene MacLeod replied to the discussion 'Advice, Please!' in the group Small Publishers and Independent Authors
"No, go with a different essay. It's probably too late, but once a work is "published" anywhere, whether on the Internet or in a dead-tree format, anything else is considered a reprint. :) Good luck with the contest!"

A cautionary tale re Independent Publishers

http://mandydegeit.wordpress.com/2012/05/14/when-publishing-goes-wrong-starring-undead-press/ For the record, most of the "small press" publishers I've been in contact with along the way are MUCH MUCH more professional than this...and it's not the first "bad press" I've read about htis particular publisher. Having said that, beware! :)See More

Jolie du Pre replied to the discussion 'Small Press vs. The Brass Ring' in the group Horror Writers
"I'm with a small press.  There are many small press and independent authors making great money.  I know one eBook author with a small press who made $100,000 in six months. "

Selene MacLeod replied to the discussion 'Which perspective do you write from' in the group Novelists (Struggling or Not)
"Whatever you do, though, DON'T HEAD HOP! If you switch POV, that's fine, just make sure the entire chapter or scene or what have you is from one person's POV. That's a very irritating thing to read, when an author arbitrarily…"

"Have you read the Harry Potter books? Because they're in third person. What they call "limited POV," because most of the time, it's from Harry's perspective, plus some "omnipotent" type background scenes and…"

Selene MacLeod replied to the discussion 'Past vs. Present Tense' in the group Novelists (Struggling or Not)
"It depends on the story. :) I find my YA stories, because of their immediacy and intimacy, and my characters' anxieties, lend themselves well to present-tense, but it only works for me as a writer if it's in the first person. I don't…"

Selene MacLeod replied to the discussion 'Title Trouble!' in the group Your First Novel
"I totally agree. Write it first--its name will become clear. I find my titles so far have come from something I wrote within the book. One character describes his state of mind as something along the lines of "It's like being under water…"

Selene MacLeod replied to the discussion 'Which ereader should I get?'
"Hi, Carrie. This won't be too helpful, I'm sure, but I'd suggest trying the software on your PC or laptop first, to see if you like ebooks. Kindle is available for free, and many books pre-1920 are also public domain (and free), so…"

Selene MacLeod replied to the discussion 'Non Vampire/erotic writers?' in the group Horror Writers
"Re: writing "shocking" stuff. There's a market for that, too. It's called "transgressive" fiction. :) Who ever would have thought there was a place for self-castration? But there is. :)  "

Welcome to the novelist group! You might introduce yourself by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion if you're not too uncomfortable talking about what you're working on. And we do a live chat every Wednesday; hope you can join us for that!
