Why Do You Write and What's Your Process

As an author, psychotherapist, wife, and mother who also does abstract paintings and studies her dreams I am incredibly interested in hearing authors discuss what brought them to writing, and the process by which they continue creating.

Should Writers Help People Escape?

Posted on July 26, 2010 at 10:00pm 3 Comments

Several weeks ago, I had a conversation with a friend about the reason I am now writing fiction. She wondered why I decided to make that switch. I recently published a non-fiction book entitled The Balance Finder and my friend suggested that I create a series of books on balance, like Stormie O'Martian did for prayer (Power of the Praying Woman, Power of the Praying Man, etc).

I enjoy writing fiction because there is something in me that relates to the now deceased Aaron Spelling. He… Continue

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to your comment about wanting to know more about my work with dreams. I just had a wonderful exchange with group member Emma French Connolly. Another member, Emily Kennedy has stated that she too is interested in discussing dreams. What's so magnificent about this is that Aristotle developed the 3-act structure for plays (that we writers also use in framing our stories) from his observation of dreams.
Like our stories hold both context and subtext, the content manifested in our dreams symbolizes that which our unconscious holds, but that we are not yet ready to integrate on a fully conscious level. Working with our dreams is much like revising a novel or story. The more we read and re-read, edit and revise, the more we uncover and clarify the story embedded in the narrative.
I'm thinking of opening a discussion on dreams that can stimulate us to begin to think of how our dreams relate to, assist and fuel our writing.
I'll try to post it this week.
I want to thank you for sharing your interest. I propelled me to give more thought to something I do on a regular basis with my family and myself--that is observe and discuss my dreams and offer comments to the dreams my husband and daughters share with me in an effort to understand themselves more deeply.

Thanks again, and have a blessed, wonderful and safe weekend.

Imagination is the key to freedom.
