War, Literature, and the Arts Conference anyone?

Posted on April 14, 2010 at 11:31pm 1 Comment

A friend of mine recommended that I attend the War, Literature, and the Arts Conference this September since I have a collection of short stories coming out (Feb 2011, Amy Einhorn Books, Penguin) about military families. Have any of you women attended? I imagine it is chock full of testosterone, especially since it is sponsored by the Air Force Academy. I've contacted one of the editors (it is hosted by the Air Force Academy's literary magazine, also titled War, Literature, and the Arts) and… Continue

Hi Siobhan! I am in Chicago for AWP--sitting on a bench in the Ravinia train station and there's a poster for your April reading at the Highland Park Public Library right over my shoulder. I saw Rebecca Rasmussen on a panel on Thursdat, too! Hope all is well with you, just thought I'd drop a line. :)

Thank you so much, Siobhan! I'm glad you liked it. The rest of the book is good too! I am chomping at the bit to see how it all goes myself; I'm struggling to be placid and patient. It's very hard!

Hi Siobhan, I don't blame you for putting your daughter in daycare during the day when you can. It gives her a chance to interact with other children and you get the chance to get work done. I wish I could do that but it is too expensive to do that with two children (2 and 5). I'm going to try my best to just write at night. I finally have a chance since work has slowed down a little so the past few days I haven't been working as much. I know once my oldest starts kindergarten in August I will definitely have more time because I will have only one child with me during the day. I would think writing short stories would be easier because a novel can be so massive. I just prefer novels I guess because with a novel you have more room to write something. I can go on about a story for 45,000 or so but I feel from personal experiences my short story was never short enough it was always too long. After this first novel is done I'm thinking about maybe trying to write a historical fiction novel.

Hello, Siobhan. Hopping up to the SF party sounds like a good plan. Let's be in touch closer to the date and firm up plans. If we get a sudden influx of Monterey SheWriters, I'm very flexible on time/place.
Until soon,
Anne
